Drace (dracenines) | 7524 comments The Penguin Classics e-book edition of The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe needs to have an ACE added. Links and information below

Already existing e-book edition: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket

TITLE: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket
AUTHOR: Edgar Allan Poe, Richard Kopley (Introduction)
ISBN: 9781101157220 [NOTE: Goodreads policy says that when an ACE of a book is created, the ISBN is moved to the most recent ACE. This is a process that can only be done by librarians when the ACE is created - otherwise, staff has to do it. As such, the ISBN needs to be moved from the edition linked above to the newly created edition when this ACE is added to the site.]
PUBLISHER: Penguin Classics
DATE PUBLISHED: June 1, 1999
NUMBER OF PAGES: 288
FORMAT: ebook
DESCRIPTION:
Poe found the germ of the story he would develop into ARTHUR GORDON PYM in 1836 in a newspaper account of the shipwreck and subsequent rescue of the two men on board. Published in 1838, this rousing sea adventure follows New England boy, Pym, who stows away on a whaling ship with its captain’s son, Augustus. The two boys repeatedly find themselves on the brink of death or discovery and witness many terrifying events, including mutiny, cannibalism, and frantic pursuits. Poe imbued this deliberately popular tale with such allegorical richness, biblical imagery, and psychological insights that the tale has come to influence writers as various as Melville, James, Verne and Nabokov.

Sorry for the immediate contradicting reply, but Richard Kopley has been mislabeled as "Contributor" rather than "Introduction". Could you please correct the label? Again, thanks for all your help.

Christine | 2061 comments The options to chose from in this field are:

Author
Illustrator
Contributor
Editor
Translator
Narrator

It IS possible to enter free values, but we are asked to keep the field consistent. If someone provides an introduction or foreword to an edition, he or she is normally classified as "Contributor".

This isn't really the case as far as I've seen. Generally speaking, the most common usage for "Contributor" that I've seen on Goodreads is for people who contribute to anthologies, whereas the people who write introductions, forewords, prefaces, and afterwords are given whatever portion they wrote as a role. If needed, I can provide plenty of examples of books where the person who wrote the introduction got "Introduction" as their parenthetical role.

Christine | 2061 comments In general, that's not a good argument, because Goodreads does have the acknowledged problem of inconsistent entries and is currently in the process of improving this. But I see your point and have checked the Manual: As far as I can see, there is no explicit rule against entering "Introduction" in this case. (It's just the comment to the field itself that asks us to use one of the suggested values for reasons of consistency.) So I have changed this entry, it should become visible with the next update of the database.
