For Tillich, fear is defined as anticipation of non-being from an object (example a fear of dogs because they’ll do something bad to you) which is overcome through courage and facing the object. However, anxiety is a much more powerful feeling because it is unrelated to any object in particular and is awareness of non-being as a whole which cannot be overcome through courage because unlike fear where the threat is the object, with anxiety the threat is nothingness itself.
