Booknblues | 12059 comments When Suleika Jaouad was just 23, a recent college graduate she moved to Paris with her boyfriend and while it seemed everything was going her way, she was suddenly so ill she had to return home to the states. She received a devastating cancer diagnosis. This is her story and the path she would take to discover her way forward after remission.

There are two parts to the book, the first half finding her way to wellness and her journey around the United States after she recovered in a search for a way forward.

I was drawn to both her story and her writing.

Grief is a ghost that visits without warning. It comes in the night and rips you from your sleep. It fills your chest with shards of glass. It interrupts you mid-laugh when you’re at a party, chastising you that, just for a moment, you’ve forgotten. It haunts you until it becomes a part of you, shadowing you breath for breath.

I hadn’t noticed the fine print until now: When you survive something that was thought to be unsurvivable, the obvious is gained. You have your life—you have time. But it’s only when you get there that you realize your survival has come at a cost.

If you enjoy memoirs, stories concerning medical issues and travel this may be a book for you. If stories about death and dying are difficult for you this is a book to avoid.

Warning it is not happy.
