Good idea? Bad idea? Don't care?

message 2: by Petter (new)

Petter Avén | 96 comments To me it all comes down to character chemistry. When there's a genuine spark between characters, then "let it be" - regardless of their sexes. And if I find myself bothered by the development of a non heterosexual relationship, then I should remind myself that as far as Star Wars is concerned I really belong to the demographics that this ficitonal universe has been almost exclusively designed for: A heterosexual white male of the "Western World".

Star Wars is big enough for homo and hetero alike; it shouldn't be an issue at all. If it's widely felt to be one, then the problem lies with our attitudes, not that some of the people who populate a fictional universe are homosexual.

Amber Martingale | 264 comments Interesting viewpoint, Petter.

John, why's that?

Me, I can't wait, either but I'm NOT gonna buy it until I've done a test run of it by getting it for free through my library. No since using money for it if I don't like it.

John Long (thecaliforniakid) | 50 comments I don't think it's a good idea, to prejudge a new female character. That's all. As for the rest of what Petter said, I disagree, it really is an issue.

message 6: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale | 264 comments He said it SHOULDN'T be an issue and if it is, it's because of the so-called "Western world's" attitudes towards sex... .

John Long (thecaliforniakid) | 50 comments That's your translation, Amber, and you're entitled to it.
But, for me, having Homo characters in fiction would ruin it.

message 8: by Liss (new)

Liss O. (aouth2o) I agree very strongly with this quote from the article: "There should be diversity in Star Wars. You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there's a lot of diversity in humans. If there's any message at all, it's simply that Star Wars is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don't want to pretend it's not."

Science fiction is probably my favorite genre as a member of the LGBTQ+ community because of the possibility of diversity where other genres seem to shrink away from it. Of course, the fact that I have to rely on a genre of things that probably will never exist is kind of a let down (and don't get me started on heteronormativity and over-sexualization in alien species design), but it at least gives me some feeling of representation.

To have diversity in Star Wars would/does not hurt any portion of any of stories within the universe, not any more than having all straight relationships would. The idea that only straight white males can enjoy and partake in science fiction is fortunately one that is slowly dissolving, and I'm glad that creators are realizing this.

Liss O. (aouth2o) (Jeez, sorry for the novel. This is just an important subject to me.)

If you knew Latin, you'd know that "homo" simply means "man" as in "humanity." Why do you think Pilate said "Ecce homo (Behold the man)" when he ordered Christ flogged before he released Barabbas? I don't even SPEAK Latin and I've known that one since I was TWO!

And Moff Delia is a LESBIAN not a HOMO. And before you spout off on THAT: in the days of the Roman Empire, to be labeled as "Lesbian" simply meant your GEOGRAPHIC origin was from the Greek island known as Lesbos. Therefore, a heterosexual man could be using a lesbian jackass (donkey) as a beast of burden or drink lesbian wine or read poetry written by the lesbian poet Sappho.... .

Allisa: Amen.

message 11: by M. (new)

M. | 5 comments At least the Empire was open-minded enough to appoint a lesbian governor. She never would have gotten the job if she weren't human, however.

Damn humans...

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale | 264 comments Interesting point, M., that Delia would never have been appointed as a Moff if she weren't a member of Homo sapiens... .
