The story depicts a group of fairly (seemingly) odd young adults. They've all been adopted into a family by someone known as "Father". They dress in strange, mis-matched, inappropriate clothes. They don't seem to understand or even be aware of the world around them. Some of them talk to animals - and the animals talk back.

At first it seems like maybe a sort of cult. But the truth turns out to be much more terrifying - and very violent. The storyline plays out very slowly, with layers and layers of twists and turns. And so odd that I never saw any of the turns coming.

It's hard to review this book without giving too much away, but definitely a wonderful blend of horror and end-of-the-world apocalypse. With just a little dry humor thrown in here and there to keep it from being too horrifying.

Robin P | 6564 comments I couldn't deal with the violence. I know it's not "real" but it was just too much.

Sue | 2940 comments Joanne - I saw you were part of the original Buddy Read that put this on the list for the 11th birthday candle. I loved the comment you made about needing to read with tea in the afternoon instead of before bed. Too true! 😂

And Robin I agree the violence was rough.
