Daniella Bernett | 156 comments I have a question for my fellow writers. It really bothers me when I tell people that I'm writing a mystery series and they say, "That's a nice hobby." I feel it's so condescending and dismissive. For me, writing is like breathing. I have to get the story down on paper. I was wondering if any of you feel the same way.

Wil Dershimer (wildersh) | 61 comments I never thought of writing as a 'hobby.' A good story with background requires a lot of research. I'm not into Romance books, but love Mystery books. Perhaps if a writer had another vocation, writing might be considered a 'hobby,' but I don't. My 'hat' goes off to all those writers that I enjoy.

Daniella Bernett | 156 comments Wil, Thanks it's always nice exchanging thoughts and ideas with other writers. I'm very excited because in December I signed a three-book contract with Black Opal Books for the first novels in my mystery series. The first book will come out later this year. I'm currently working on the fourth book in the series. I've writer 114 pages thus far.

Daniella Bernett | 156 comments Wil, I'm new to Goodreads and the world of "social media." I don't have a subscription list. Can explain to me how it works?

Unless you're getting money for it (i.e. selling books), it is a hobby. That's the difference between a vocation and an avocation.

If you are making money with it, then you can reply, "How much did you make last year with your fly fishing/Beabie Baby collecting/crocheting?"

It wasn't until I started having to declare Schedule C income for it that I started claiming to be an author.

I am not sure. Usually it is a Web Page. I notice that many lists are handled through MailChimp or something like that. I would contact some of the authors on GoodReads and ask them how they set up a list, such as Gemma Halliday one of my favorite authors and a tremendous publisher:
