Gabe's stepmother resented him for having survived the coal mine disaster. Do you think this is a natural reaction for most in similar circumstances?

I think if she really thought of herself as his mother she would have been grateful that someone in her family lived. Grief is messy and doesn't follow rules so I hate to judge.
