I actually really liked this approach. For the most part, I am a fan of flashbacks.
It gave us such a glimpse into Gabe, and I loved those usually not included insights into a character's... character. It helped me to understand why he was the way he was to a point, but it also made me angry at him at times because he should know better.
There a few things that I love more than young, innocent, passionate love stories. So this was definitely a welcome approach for me. Especially with the ugliness of the rest of the story.

I loved the flashbacks, not only because the romance was so lovely, but it was needed to break up the, as you say Monica, ugliness of the other aspects of the story. It also allowed us to experience their romance more than just "insta love" as we could see the essence of both of them stayed the same.
I agree with you two. The flashbacks were short and sweet giving us the glimpse we needed. Reece used the flashbacks well.
