Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments We Go Again

I would like to nominate my most recent book, We Go Again.

Set during WWII, it centres around the actions of a small group of soldiers in France. It is different from other works of this type as it deals with the relationship between the soldiers themselves and gives an insight into the effects that war can have on a person's state of mind.

Although there's some nice action scenes in this story, there is also a spot of romance to remind the reader that even battle-hardened soldiers are still human. It also covers some of the less well known roles that women played during the conflict.

Joan Curtis | 1 comments Hi fellow authors, I'd like to post The Clock Strikes Midnight

If you like a mystery/suspense that's been described as a page-turner with rich characters, this may be a book for you.

The Clock Strikes Midnight is a race against time in a quest for revenge and atonement. This is a story about hate, love, betrayal and forgiveness.

If you found out you had only 3 months to live, what would you do? That’s the question Janie Knox faces in this fast-paced mystery full of uncertainty and tension that will surprise you until the very last page.

Thanks!

Emerald Lavere | 8 comments I am putting forward my book, THE WIKOMSETTE. This is a fast paced, erotic novel with a heavy dose of adventure and a science fiction angle. A 32 year old widow finds herself unexpectedly in a jungle with several men who expect her to be the wife of their small tribe. Her challenges? Adjust to their odd society, figure out who these men really are, and uncover their secret mission.
Why you should read it: For fun, intensity, romance, adventure, and an original tale. Also, this is my first published book (a sequel is in the works, and hopefully will be out later this year)and I could really use the support to get this story circulating. Thank you! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

"Nothing prepared us for the last day."

Could Dan Amenta be the last man alive on the planet? Death has swept away the lives of billions of people, but Dan and his family were spared. By whom, and why?

Surviving, searching for a reason to their lives, and looking for other survivors lead Dan to discover the truth about the extermination of the human race.

The encounter with Laura, a young and sexy girl of Italian origin, raises ethical and moral questions that had never touched the Amentas family before.

Other survivors force Dan to confront his past to find answers to the many questions.

The past and the present come together and upset the fragile balance, physical and mental, which allowed the Amentas to find a new meaning to their existence.

Dan discovers his final role in a plan with million years old roots. The survivors have to choose a future that has no past, or remain in a past with no future.

PA novels are often about cataclysmic events, survivors fending off dangers at every page, zombie attacks, aliens destroying everything for inscrutable reasons, or as a fulfillment of a religious prophecy. Daimones is different. The novel places a few survivors in a world that experienced a planetary culling of humankind, one with no immediate or apparent cause. The Apocalypse has arrived, yet the 'why' and 'how' remain unknown in a frustrating and fearful reality for Dan Amenta and his family.

Daimones Trilogy is a sci-fi for the thinking person and who loves to envision a story through a growing, and complex character personality. Written as a journey into what makes humans what they are.

Readers non accustomed to sci-fi have received the story well, too, as romance and love haunt Dan at every page.

Readers who liked novels such as "The Road", "The Silent Earth", "Childhood's End", "On the Beach", "The Stand", "Tomorrow", "Earth Abides", "Battlefield Earth", will probably like the Daimones Trilogy.

Raj | 4 comments Hi, readers.

I'm Raj and I hope your day is well. I am grateful for your consideration of my novel. I think that my book Excellence speaks to many of us. The story explores what it's like to grow up disadvantaged, but not settling for that, and wanting so much more out of life. It's not a rags to riches tale. This is about making mistakes along the way, and having powerful insights that change the course of your life. Does being abused as a youth doom you to a tragic reality? Excellence asks: How do you succeed when life tries to devour you? My characters Todd, Lee, and Ebony find out.

Patrick Jones | 4 comments Nice to meet everyone here :)
I would like to nominate my book, "The Wolf's Moon" by Patrick Jones for consideration as a group read. "The Wolf's Moon" is my debut novel. The sequel, as well as two short stories, are in the works. The audio book is also in process with Audible ACX and promises to be a great listen at about 10 hours. "The Wolf's Moon" currently has 108 reviews on Amazon with a 4.3 star average. I would like to propose a "free event" of the ebook on Amazon to distribute copies of the novel, as this process would be the most efficient. I can be flexible on the dates that you agree on to make it available to your group. A 3 day "free event" would probably be best, spanning from a Friday through a Sunday, or again, your choice of days. I am very interested in some feedback on the book cover as I have just revised the cover in response to some suggestions. On Goodreads it is the latest cover, whereas on Amazon it is the cover just revised. This would be great feedback for me to see if people like the new look with the "red" author name on one line or the original with the author name in white on two lines. This would be a fun study on which I could post the results as a topic on my blog at http://www.thelindenchronicles.com
Please see my book description below as well as the specifics for this book. This is a mystery/thriller/suspense with a touch of horror and a touch of romance. Thank you so much for your interest!! Enjoy your weekend!
Book Description:
Mark Lansdowne, whose friendly exterior masks a history of covert missions and lethal violence, is still recovering from the death of his beloved wife one year prior. The outside world intrudes in a bloody fashion with a string of horrific attacks on locals. The body count rises; the apparent culprit is an animal extinct for thousands of years. Lansdowne relentlessly tracks the creature, inadvertently becoming engaged in a life-or-death battle. Victorious but wounded, Lansdowne ends up in the hospital – while outside, evidence implies that the animal Lansdowne killed was not the only one of its kind. The Wolf's Moon

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments Probably best to just leave it up to authors to put their entries in each time, especially as we need to supply copies to those taking part.

Some authors might want to try a different book next time around as well, and automatically putting each entry in might end up with a huge and unmanageable list of potentials after a few months.

Stephanie Davies-Arai (sdaviesarai) | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I'd like to nominate my book 'Communicating with Kids' - it's non-fiction so I'm not sure if it's right for this thread, but it's for anyone who has/works with/is interested in communication with children. I would love it to be more widely read by parents especially - it de-bunks a lot of the myths of parenting (such as the need to be perfect) and it's full of surprises. You won't have read another parenting book like this as it's not based on any ideology or 'one right way' of parenting, but just on what we say and what children actually hear. There's a bit of neuroscience in there but it's very readable and down-to-earth and based on real life with real children. It's also based on my own journey from anxious incompetence to confidence as a parent, so it contains lots of examples that every parent will recognize!

It's a slim volume but packed with interesting and useful stuff on every page!!

Narayan Liu (narayanliu) | 16 comments I would like to put my book forward:
The Masks of Monsters by Narayan Liu
The Masks of Monsters

The story is set in 18th century Europe and it follows Darius, a young man who commits a heinous murder and flees on a self-imposed exile. He encounters Aeron, a monstrous vampire who snatches away from the world he once knew and hurls him into a new one full of demonic creatures and merciless warlords. So it is he fights to escape this terrible world as well as the monster he has become. He isn't the only one. Aeron, though renowned for being the paragon of his race, battles the flicker of doubt that emerges in himself. It has been so long since he was human and for so long he has soaked in death without mercy, shielding himself away from the guilt and regret.

I wrote this book because at some point in our lives, we act on fear and make mistakes to protect the things we care for and love. Sometimes, because of those mistakes, people build a walls around themselves to protect their hearts from the painful consequences. It's the first step toward becoming something monstrous. In 'The Masks of Monsters' I attempt to explore that first step. The lies, anguish and hatred some suffer to hold the mask upon their faces. I attempt to explore the lengths some go through for the things they cherish the most.

This book's main purpose for me as a writer, is to introduce readers to a world I am trying to build. It is a part of a larger series I am still in the process of writing.

Thank you for reading and considering this. I hope you enjoy it.

Narayan

Deb McEwan (goodreadscomdeb_mcewan) Hi Everyone. 'Beyond Death' Smarturl.it/bdata1
is the first of my afterlife trilogy. It's a paranormal thriller injected with a touch of humour and asks the question: what really happens when we die? The story is from the point of view of Claire Sylvester who finds herself on the other side before her time. I've been told that my take on this is unique and the way the bad guys are dealt with has surprised and pleased most readers so far.
Thanks for considering and enjoy your weekend wherever you are in the world.

In this romantic comedy, a young woman learns that having it all can be an illusion and that the most important thing in life is believing in yourself and the power of new beginnings.

This character-driven romance will make you smile, laugh and root for Cressida Wentworth, a young woman, struggling to find her own voice, recapture her self-esteem post divorce and repair her relationship with her over the top, Vegas showgirl mother who's picked the most inopportune moment to stop by for a prolonged visit.

Sameer Ketkar (sameerketkar) | 1 comments I'd like to nominate my book God's Glass.

God's Glass by Sameer Ketkar

It's a very unique book, a fictional biography of a masochist. But it's not focused on sexuality or titillation like many stories about masochists. My story is focused on the struggles that a masochist faces growing up in a fundamentalist religious household. My protagonist, Joanie Callahan, just wants to live her life and be happy, but society, family, friends, and her church won't let her. What will she do to survive?

message 25: by Zack (new)

Zack Love (zacklove) Hi bloggers and fellow authors! I would like to nominate my book "The Syrian Virgin"

The Syrian Virgin

This gripping, coming-of-age romance is set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, so the story is extremely topical, about an issue that is constantly in the headlines. The novel was recently reviewed in the Examiner: http://www.examiner.com/review/book-r...

"The Syrian Virgin" falls into several genres: Women's Fiction, Literary Fiction, Contemporary Romance, Teen and Young Adult, Romantic Suspense, or Historical Fiction.

Here is a more detailed blurb for the book:

Anissa is traumatized by the most brutal conflict of the 21st Century: the Syrian Civil War. In 2012, Islamists in Homs terrorize a Syrian-Christian community and destroy everything that a young woman holds dear. Narrowly escaping death, Anissa restarts her devastated life as a college student in NY. She is bewildered and lost -- a virgin in every sense.

But despite her inexperience with men and life in the United States, Anissa is quickly drawn to two powerful individuals: Michael Kassab, the Syrian-American leader working to found the first Mideast Christian state, and Julien Morales, her Columbia University professor who runs a $20 billion hedge fund.

Complicating matters, Michael is still attached to his ex-girlfriend and Julien is the most sought after bachelor in Manhattan (and has hidden demons even his therapist can't extract). Anissa's heart and her communal ties pull her in different directions, as she seeks hope and renewal in a dark world.

WARNING: This book is about a young woman's difficult journey: her escape from Syria's Civil War, her transition to a new a country, and the relationships that she forms along the way, including her romantic interests in two very different men. The story is set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War and makes reference to violent acts, sometimes in detail. There is some occasional profanity and a few scenes that depict sexual intimacy. Accordingly, the recommended minimum age for readers is 16. The novel might be compared to books like "The Diary of Anne Frank" or "The Kite Runner."

Jessica Tornese | 2 comments I would like to offer up the first in my YA time travel trilogy, Linked Through Time.Linked Through TimeWhile it is in the YA genre, I have heard from readers of all ages that they like the book. I am looking for opinions on the book in all aspects of character and plot development, and writing from the YA point of view. The trilogy was a work that began based on my own life- when I moved to a rural town as a teenager and had to love on the farm my father grew up on. I also used real stories and events from my father's childhood for the recreations of the past. He grew up with 11 children, very poor-- it made for some interesting stories!! There are hints of romance and history, and the book leads into the sequel, but can be read by itself. There is also a mystery paired with some suspense....will you join Kate Christenson as she battles a past that was never meant to be hers??

Gina Dickerson (ginadickerson) | 1 comments Hello,
I'd like to offer the first book in the Mortiswood Tales series, Mortiswood: Kaelia Awakening. It is aimed at older YA readers and upwards, and is a mix of magic, myth, romance, adventure, and a lot of action! It is set in the modern world although there are different realms existing alongside, and there are hints of myth - primarily ancient Norse. If you're a fan of fantasy with some different paranormal creatures then this could be for you!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Here is the blurb:

“They’ve been waiting lifetimes for you, Kaelia. They want you and will stop at nothing to have you.”

The warning’s rung in Kaelia’s ears since she discovered she’s far from the ordinary girl who grew up in the coastal town of Margate. She has power. The first time she shows it, death strikes, the second, she loses someone special, and on the third, her mother disappears.

Destiny is coming for Kaelia and there’s nowhere she can hide. THEY have stepped out of the shadows to find her. For generations, there have been whispers of The Chosen One. They speak of a name - Marrock - whose destiny entwines with that of The Chosen One.

Kaelia must avenge the wrongs, uncover who Marrock is, find her mother, and ...

FIGHT

Facing forces of depraved evil, magic, and myth, Kaelia’s search leads her through magical forests and unearthly realms.

Who, or what, can Kaelia trust? Is she strong enough to survive the horror? All she knows is her life will never be the same again...

Kaelia Awakening
Thank you for considering my book!

Stephen Oram (stephenoram) | 5 comments Hi. I'd like to put forward my dystopian novel Quantum Confessions

Quantum Confessions by Stephen Oram

“A veritable head trip; yet rooted in a believable and sometimes visceral near-future.”

Grey is a high performing student with attitude. Aled is torn between his morals and his desires. They live in a world where those that believe in absolute truth are on a collision course with those that don’t. Society is becoming dangerously polarised and despite a thread of history that binds them together they take opposite sides in the conflict; she is recruited by The Project and he is given custody of The Proof of Existence.
Against the backdrop of a failing society and experiments to find the link between quantum physics and a supreme being, the real question that unfolds is…
“Who chooses your reality?”

Hock Tjoa (hockgtjoa) | 4 comments I'd like to nominate
Agamemnon Must Die by Hock G. Tjoa
It is based on myths/legends regarding what happened after the Trojan War. In particular, it tries to imagine what Aeschylus was dealing with in his Oresteia.
Towards the end of the 13th century B.C., the "mother of all wars" for the millennium, the Trojan War is over. After ten years, Agamemnon of Mycenae who had led the Greeks on that epic battle, has returned. All his people want is for their lives to return to normal.

But the gods have unfinished items on their agenda.

In the middle of the 5th century B. C., Aeschylus wrote the Oresteia, a trilogy of plays, to give meaning to these memories. It was required reading for all classics major, but I didn't "get it" despite wrestling with a dozen or so translations.

This therefore is my retelling.

An early reader commented;

Agamemnon Must Die is a superbly-written retelling of the tale. The author combines verse with narrative in an effective way for 21st Century audiences.

Piper Templeton, author of Rain Clouds and Waterfalls

Marius Hancu | 6 comments Hello, everyone,

I'd like to nominate my novel Simon and Hiroko, a dramatic contemporary love story.

description

Genre: LITERARY FICTION/CONTEMPORARY
Not so alternative ... real history.

The sweet and the serene go roller-coaster dramatic to the edge of survival in this love story set in the 1990s, inspired in part by the most serious terrorist attack suffered ever by Tokyo, Japan, which took place at that time.

Hiroko Yuasa, a Japanese traditional dancer, sways and turns in one of her dances, and Simon Fraser thinks he might not have enough film to capture her. He deems himself lucky -- it has taken him months to find her again in Tokyo, after their chance meet at Narita. An American architectural photographer on contract in Japan, he plans already an exhibition with their work together. They take their time in their love.

Before any words of a formal proposal are spoken though, her father gets wind of their palpable closeness. Here is a man thought to have killed with a single Katana slash her mother's lover once. Also certifiably known to have risen to be a Japanese Mafia godfather years after pushing the car of a gang of made men into the moat of the Imperial palace. A teenager then. And Kazuhiro Yuasa has for this misalliance of his daughter only the eyes of a man whose father was a Kamikaze pilot who died by throwing his plane against an American warship during WWII.

Tony Evans (tonyevans) | 5 comments Code Name Atlas
Code Name Atlas

Atlas is a war hero caught between his wife's love or saving the survivors of earth. Earth has been destroyed by unknown forces leaving it in ruins. The closest thing to organized leadership is the packs of scavengers that take what they want. To keep his wife safe he builds an army. To give her the life she wants he fights. To win back their home he must go to war. But, she doesn't believe that his sacrifice is for her and his selflessness is driving them apart. As he struggles for his wife's devotion he is caught in a war with a tyrannical dictator. To win the war and his wife safety he must give her up and fight a war where defeat is expected. To fight a dictator he must become a warlord.

Hovering over everything is the threat of an alien invasion which Atlas slowly pieces together through unreliable stories told by the survivors. He soon learns that his fight is only a small part in a war that has been raging for hundreds of years and reaches throughout the galaxy.

A gritty and realistic feel blends with minimal use of science fiction elements to create a rich, believable contemporary story of one soldier's heart-wrenching post-apocalyptic journey to keep his family alive.

"Code Name Atlas is a very accomplished, spirited novel of depth and intelligence that grips you in a vice like hold from beginning to end. Highly recommended." SFBook.com

I would be honored of you choose to read my book. And if you like it I'll even throw in my short story collection for free, Divergent Dreams. All you have to do is ask :) Thank you for your time and consideration.

A supporting cast of quirky friends and horse people are woven into this story with a bit of humor, a bit of danger and a lot of heat.
This is a stand alone novel, though there may be further adventures for Jake and Melanie in the future.
Not recommended for under 18. Strong sexual content

Roderick Vincent | 4 comments Hello all,

I nominate, my novel released on November 28, 2014, The Cause:

The Cause (The Minutemen Series, #1) by Roderick Vincent

Why read it?

I think Martin Fletcher's quote says it the best:

"It's epic, ambitious, powerful and inventive with big themes of liberty, oppression, resistance and revolution. There's a topicality that is very relevant and a seriousness that isn't undermined by the ballsy action sequences or the sheer entertainment of fights, skirmishes, hijacks, and the visceral horror of the survivalist scenes at The Abattoir."
-Martin Fletcher, ex editor of Douglas Coupland (author of Generation X)

The second American Revolution will be a fire lit from an internal spark.

America is on the verge of economic and social collapse. The government has made individual freedom its enemy. African American hacker Isse Corvus enters a black-ops training camp. He discovers the leaders are revolutionaries seeking to return the U.S. back to its Constitutional roots. Soon the camp fractures. Who is traitor? Who is patriot? Corvus learns that if he doesn't join The Cause and help them hack the NSA's servers, it could mean his life. If he joins, he becomes part of a conspiracy to overthrow America's financial oligarchy.

NSA Director Titus Montgomery is building a system to pacify America's instigators. He is told by the President rule of law must be maintained at all costs. What happens when martial law meets revolution? The Cause is a dystopian thriller taking many topical issues to the next logical level. The dense web of the NSA's previous generation's surveillance system has been supplanted by a new, more ruthless one. Robotic warfare, drones, quantum computers, Anonymous, the NSA, and a cast of conniving characters, this novel takes you on a manifest journey on how a new revolution could be born.

Thanks for your consideration!
Rick

Hi, I'm new here. I'm nominating my new historical novel(I'm kind of historical myself at age 83) Elixir of the Incas set in the raucous world of music and entertainment in 1890s New York. Don't let the title throw you: it's not about the ancient civilization of Peru.

It is about two young guys under age 21 trying to make it as a vaudeville team and the adventures and misadventures they experience in their quest for success. Billy Brannigan and his younger sidekick, Danny Baron, discover that the road to fame has many odd twists and turns. Along the way they mix with talented performers, willing showgirls, quirky songwriters and famous personalities of the Gilded Age including John L. Sullivan, Tony Pastor and Victor Herbert among others. Both find romance but discover that love, like life, seldom follows the path chosen.

The question is: can Billy's relentless thirst for fame and wealth conquer the calamities that befall him--lost career, lost love, lost friendship, even a murder charge? But that's the rest of the story!
