SOLVED: _The Long Earth_ by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter

I feel dumb, I read this preview/review within the last 5ish years, probably the last 2 years - and didn't note the title or author.

Guy invents an easy and cheap means of traveling to alternate dimensions, and (US?) Government tries to stop him... but it's too late, he released the plans on the internet, and soon everyone has the plans.

Pretty soon, (nearly) everyone has left this world for greener pastures in the multiverse.
