I have searched high and low for this book to no avail. I believe the plot is about a boy, who starts to lose confidence in life after his dad leaves their family for another man. I bought this in a hardcover from the dollar tree around 2000-2002 The cover had hot pink writing and the dust jacket was white. For some reason I believe the word America or American was used in the title. And I keep thinking of a road trip as well. Every thing I find online with this sort of plot was published much later. Thanks!

I don't believe that's it. Based simply on the fact that I remember the dust jacket being stark white. And I believe the title was in cursive.
