I don't think you can read Caraval as a standalone because the first book ends on a cliffhanger :) However, you can read ouabh series without reading the Caraval series first but l would recommend you read the Caraval series before you begin ouabh.

I read caraval before once upon a broken heart. and I am so HAPPY I did.
you can read once upon a broken heart, but I think it would be a shame, because you'll miss so much to jakcs character.
and UOABH is now one of my favorite book, like i think about it so many times
