Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments Hello there,

I coauthored a number of books with Mary Stone. Now, I'm branching out on my own with a different genre and don't want to confuse readers. To this end, I need to have my name removed from the books I coauthored in two of Mary's series, Ellie Kline and Charli Cross. Mary tried to do this but kept getting an error. What can be done?

Many thanks in advance
Donna

Scott | 10593 comments Nothing. We don't remove valid book data.

Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments These books are not listed on Amazon as my books and never will be. They are only related to Mary Stone. I sincerely hope this makes a difference.

Thanks very much

Sorry it doesn't.

Think of Goodreads as being a library rather than a bookshop. :)

Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments Oh, dear, that's not helpful at all to my brand-new career. I foresee much confusion on the readers' part.

Thanks for your time.

Why?

Because this is a completely different genre I'm writing in. Going from thrillers to Paranormal Urban Fantasy. I will not be mentioning the thrillers at all, not ever, so when people see them here on my author profile it's going to cause questions and confusion. Especially since they won't find the books on Amazon under my name.

Mary is perfectly okay with all of this and wishes me well. I can ask her to come here to comment for herself, if that would help.

Thank you

Scott | 10593 comments Lots of writers write in different genres.

Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments Okay, let's try this a different way. Would it be possible to keep my co-written books off my author profile when I apply?

Thank you

message 10: by Scott (new)

Scott | 10593 comments No, they are your books.

Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments So I have no say about what I want on my own profile?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Donna wrote: "it's going to cause questions and confusion. "

I have never understood why authors underestimate their readers and attribute confusion to them.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Donna wrote: "So I have no say about what I want on my own profile?"

You can choose to use a middle initial or something for the different genre and then you would have that as a separate profile.

Iain Banks versus Iain M. Banks is the first example I think of for this, but there are definitely others.

Emily | 17759 comments Even big time authors like Nora Roberts and James Patterson write in multiple genres.
I promise you most people will be able to tell. You can add a sentence to your bio that says something like "I used to write X, but now I write Y! Here's a link to my new book!" It will be fine.

Donna Berdel (authordonnaberdel) | 11 comments It's not really about writing in a different genre. It's about the confusion that new readers will bring to me and take me away from my writing time. They'll see these other books on my profile that I am not in any way promoting, and they won't find them under my name on Amazon. I'm not underestimating them. I'm giving them credit for being bright and inquisitive. They will have questions. The emails and comments on social media I'll likely receive is giving me a headache. I'm not at the point yet where I can hire a VA to answer them.

Again, the best solution at this point since I can't remove my name here from these books is to keep them off my author profile here. Why can't this be done? It's -my- profile. Don't I have any say in what appears on it?

Many thanks in advance.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Donna wrote: "It's -my- profile. Don't I have any say in what appears on it?"

It is the place on Goodreads where books authored by you appear. All of them. It isn't your personal profile.

You...think they'll be confused because you aren't promoting older books?

Scott, I'd really prefer if someone else responded as I'm reading a bit of an attitude in your reply. If I'm wrong, I sincerely apologize. It's the combination of me never mentioning a lot of books AND them not finding them under my name on Amazon. They'll ask about this.

So sorry, Elizabeth, I clicked on the wrong reply.

Finally, if nothing can be done, nothing can be done. Although, I continue to not understand this.

message 20: by Scott (new)

Scott | 10593 comments Maybe you should have left your name on the Amazon records.
Anyway, it's still on the books themselves, and that is what is relevant here.

Again, if you haven't published under your own name yet, consider what I posted above about inserting an initial, or authoring your name somewhat differently than the other profile. Goodreads can help you out with the profiles. For example, the co-authored ones can be on a separate profile, but only if the names are different.

That difference can be minor. Your readers can still know you are the same person and yet see your books as separate genres.

I did not realize that the different genres was not what would cause confusion. I still recommend putting a short sentence in your bio as an explanation.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Emily wrote: " I still recommend putting a short sentence in your bio as an explanation."

And that is definitely another option. Probably simpler in the long run.
