* Description - From the Preface: "The incomparable 'Song of Roland' is the great French epic. * * * As in the other book of the 'Knighthood' series - 'Beowulf' and 'A Knight of Arthur's Court' - an attempt is here made to reproduce this heroic tale in a form suitable for young people in the elementary schools. The story presents a vivid picture of a romantic and heroic age and portrays some of the most famous characters ever conceived. In the present adaptation the qualities of the Old French style have been retained as far as practicable." The text shows the viewpoints of the original and likely of the translator's times, being very pro-Christian and anti-others (whom they refer to broadly as 'pagans'), but also shows the heroic tropes of warriors who kill dozens of the foe, who fight despite being fatally wounded, and who support their brethren, which appear in literature, film, and other media today.
