I read the book at least 10 years ago, however I think it was written in the eighties (I could be completely wrong on that one). The story starts with a man in a small village and he makes some kind of connection to this giant bear that is generally looked upon as the manifestation of a god. Eventually the bear is captured and he is set up as the spokesperson of the bear/god. I don't remember much more at this stage, sorry!
