Calila | 2746 comments Week 5: Cronin's Key

Rating: ★★★★★

Review: I really enjoyed this book. I loved the connection of vampirism and the ancient world. I really liked Alec, I loved his reaction to the whole "fated" thing. He didn't go over the top "unacceptable!". Cronin was amazing. I think the "special powers" was an interesting twist. The action was really well done. I liked the ending, I was kind of dreading the other alternative a little bit, so I'm glad it didn't go that way yet. Maybe later in the series, but now it's too soon. Can't wait for book 2!

review: I really enjoyed this story. There was great chemistry between Brianna and her FBI partner Morrison. The love relationship between Brianna and Nathan was believable and the pacing was good. The book was about witches and vampires. The story was engaging, witty and enjoyable. Too bad there isn't more in the series.

Review: This is the fortieth book in this series! And, I’m still enjoying it. I think the large, interesting cast of characters certainly keeps the books fresh. Eve and Roarke are dynamic individuals and the evolution of their relationship feels genuine. The storyline was good. The tracking and figuring out who the murderer was seemed very mired in boring police work, but somehow that worked for me too. Not the most thrills and chills of this series, but it was an interesting read.

Book Title: Slade by Laurann Dohner
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
I very rarely read a book more than once. The first book in this series, Fury, was one of the exceptions. This meant that Slade had a lot of live up to and for the most part, it delivered. The characters were great, as was the dialogue between them. I liked the way, Laurann Dohner introduced the back story, a little about Trisha so that we understood how and why she ended up at the New Species Homeland and then adding little bits of how Slade got to Homeland and what he remembered about their first encounter. I particularly liked how the new characters were introduced as well.

My only disappointment was how quickly the initial conflict was resolved. I would have preferred to see a little more interaction between the characters before this was resolved or perhaps a little more development of Slade’s angst about the situation. This is a great second book to a very unique series. I’m very much looking forward to reading Book 3, Valiant.

I really, really enjoyed this one. I just love me a bit of angst with my romance. I would have 5-starred it if Davis didn't make such a dick move. Or even if I understood his reasons. I understood Ben's reasons but not Davis'. And Ben let him off waaay to easy. That man should have been crawling and begging. Fun read though and I can't wait to read Eddie's story!

Rating: ★★★★★

Review: I really loved this installment of this series. I enjoyed seeing Sloan and Dex navigate and define their relationship. Also loved the side romance hints(and more than hints) with Calvin/Hobbes and Cael/Ash and even Hobbes' brother/the doctor whose names escape me at the moment. I love that Sloan/Dex TALK. Sure it takes a day or two, but it happens. Was getting frustrated with the mystery aspect, I think it was kind of just there. Glad it ended the way it ended though, HATE that guy. Curious about the new organization that was introduced. Can't wait to read the third THIRDS Book.

Review: This is a great follow up to Moment Of Impact. I really enjoyed seeing more of Collin and Tanner's relationship develop. It's not all sunshine and roses even though they love each other. There's still growing pains. Collin is still awkward with PDA and is pretty insecure. Tanner is more self assured but has problems speaking up when he has an issue. Collin and Tanner go to Fire Island for the summer to work and move in a house with some roommates including Wendy, Tanner's BFF/ex-FWB and her boyfriend Dex. We really don't get to spend that much time learning about the roommates. There's a married and expecting couple. There's Maggie who the less said about the better. She was the WORST. Also Amy who is a customer who latches on to Tanner despite him being taken. This book did no favors for women, the three "recurring" women were horrible. And Brad? who is in a band and gay. There's also Jason, who Collin works with and who falls for him to which Collin is oblivious. I expected more interactions with them but everyone seemed off doing their own thing, which I guess is realistic. I knew what was coming to be the grand angst/misunderstanding and I still dreaded it. It seemed a bit cliche to me to be honest. I did like the resolution to it though. There was talking and admittance and forgiveness and acceptance. We also learn some more about Collin's brother which is something I was looking forward to from the first book, so that made me happy. All in all this was a nice continuation with a few quibbles. The writing itself is still great. The characters are still lovable. The ones you're supposed to love anyway. I really can't wait for book three.

Review: I loved this new look at Anna and Charles. The over-arching story line is getting really interesting. The Fae bad guy was really creepy. The old friends gave us a treasured look at Charles life before Anna. We continue to get such interesting glimpses of Bran too. I loved the scene when Anna made the others “drunk” with her Omega-powers. I especially love how even a person as old as Charles still needs to overcome fears and grow. Anna is really coming into her own power and finding peace in her life.

In Too Deep by Kate Sherwood
If you're looking for a really sweet but slooooow burning novel, then this is the book for you. Some of the things that bothered me in novel it sounds like were handled better in the short story which I haven't read. The big cottage reveal would have been much better if Warren had been caught with Cade and Aiden protected him. Waaaay better. And all along I'm thinking if Cade let himself fall in love with Aiden and things went to crap, he would be destroyed but he didn't seem all that affected. I guess I just didn't get the emotions I was looking for but I still really enjoyed their story.

Book Title: Rock Hard by Nalini Singh
Rating: ★★★★★

Review:
This is a great story. The characters have very real flaws that take time to overcome. I really liked that Nalini Singh resisted the temptation to completely heal the characters. With this much to work on it would have been disappointing if they weren't a little imperfect at the end. Despite the difficulties the two main characters had to overcome, they are very sweet to each other and I really enjoyed the blending of romance with angst.

I also liked that this story was set in Auckland and that the author spent a little time describing the town. It's a truly beautiful town and it helped bring the story to life.

I also realize I missed week 7. This past week was Derby week in Louisville. Working in the Children's Hospital, we had tons of guest visitors and charity events that we were part of helping with given the field I work in. I ended up working really long hours and crashed every night. I realize I let the team down and I'm incredibly sorry for that. Sighs just frustrated with myself bc I thought I had posted book 6 and every time I thought about posting book 7 I never had a device with me that would do it. I'm really sorry!

Lover Eternal by JR Ward

Read: 4-23-2015 4 Stars

Review: I'm beginning to read this series. I've read a couple of the books but am working on reading the rest. I'm really starting to like the beginning books. Rhage is a great character. If he wasn't a vampire, I would probably keep her around. Mary was the lead female character and she wasn't as I expected. I liked how she had a backbone and tried to be very independent. I like how Rhage had to work for his relationship with Mary and it didn't come easy. I am going to continue to read these books. They are a little darker than my normal but every now and then I need that.
