Max gave a small nod of acknowledgement, then got to eating his supper. He ate slowly, still looking at her. Between bites, he asked, "Why were you trying to come here early?"

She shrugged small"I knew I was going to get hell from everyone. But as you know, I still ran into some" She sighed sipping her soup
Max gave a slight nod, then lapsed into silence as they ate their supper. He felt the urge to strike up conversation, but decided against it. When she wanted to talk, she would talk.
Penny ate her supper in silence until it bugged her. "So. What are we starting with? Knife throwing? Tracking! Learning to disappear?!" she said her voice full of excitement. "Or better yet start with the bows! When will I get a bow like yours?!" She asked unable to contain her bubbly anxiousness
Max sighed. At least she'd lasted longer than he'd thought she would. "No. No. No. No. And not yet. You're not strong enough. But before any of that, you need a horse." He said. He finished off his supper, leaning back in his chair as he awaited more questions that were sure to come.
She raised her eyebrows a bit "A horse? I've never rode a horse before. What if I'm no good?" She asked worridely.
"But let's say I am pretty good at riding. Then what's next? Invading enemy territories. Spying on some Skandians?"
"It's ok if you're no good." He said. "After all, is it not my job to teach you the stuff you don't know? Besides, the horse will help you out as much as he can."
(Sorry it was all supposed to be one post but I accidentally posted seperately x.x ) haha
Penny nodded thoughtfully and finished her food quickly. After she finished she leaned back and stretched yawning. "Need me to do anything before bed?"
Penny nodded thoughtfully and finished her food quickly. After she finished she leaned back and stretched yawning. "Need me to do anything before bed?"
Max thought for a moment, smiling slightly. He could use this opportunity to make her do housework, but it was late. He'd feel bad if he did. "No, go on to bed. I'll get you a cloak tomorrow, then we'll go get your horse." He said. He motioned to a door that led to her room.
She jumped up and hugged him"Thanks for accepting me" She said quietly then hurried to her room anxious for the coming day. She quickly unpacked and made her bed and snuggled in.
Max blinked in surprise at the hug. He sat stiff, awkward, until she let go. Once she'd run off to her room, he stared after her. Shaking his head slightly, he collected the bowls and walked to the kitchen. He washed them, then went back to his own room.
She tossed and turned for a couple hours unable to fall asleep. She sighed and sat up. she threw on some pants and a coat. Slipping her boots on she opened her door quietly and peered out. Seeing it was clear she crept out not wanting to wake the older ranger. She grabbed her bow and slung her quiver over her shoulder going.out the front door closing it silently behind her. Once on the porch she looked up at the full moon which illuminated everything. From her studies she assumed it was about 2 am. She walked a little ways to a tree and stepped back a ways. She drew an arrow and nocked it eyeing a spot where two limbs met. She took a deep breath and let the arrow loose. She smiled a bit when the arrow struck only a couple inches away from her target.
As Max was trained to wake up at a mouse scurrying across the ground, he woke at the shuffles of her feet as she passed his door. Curious but not alerted, he stood and crept to the front door once she'd gone outside. He put on his cloak, then slipped outside, unnoticed of course, to see where she was going. Once he saw her first shot, however, he stepped out of the shadows. "Impressive." He says. "But not Ranger standards, of course. You were aiming for the joint in the wood, correct?"
She jumped in surprise at his sudden appearance. She laughed a little "You startled me! And yes. its better then I've done before. Sorry if I woke you" She said sincerely going to retrieve her arrow
Max stared after her as she retrieved it. "You're ok, you didn't wake me." He said when she got back. He jerked his head slightly to her bow. "Why'd you decide to practice at-" He glanced up to see the time, "2 in the morning?"
She replaced the arrow with the others. "I couldnt sleep. So I thought I would practice a bit. I guess I need a lot.more practice" she laughed softly
Max nodded once again, staring at the bow for a moment. "Where'd you get that?" He asked. It wasn't a recurve bow, like the Rangers use, but it was similar. It also seemed that she was used to it, so she might be able to keep it, or something on a bigger scale for more power behind it.
She glanced at the bow in her hands"My father made it for me when I was 4. He wanted me to be able to.protect myself. He's the one who taught me to use it. "
Max stares at it for a moment, then looks back at the joint in the wood that she had been aiming at. "Too big of a target." He decided. He pointed at a small knot in the wood. "There."
She eyed where he pointed and selected an arrow. She nocked it and pulled back closing one eye before releasing
Max gave a quick nod of satisfaction as the arrow found its home a few inches away from the knot. "Good. Could be better, but good." He said to her.
She grabbed another and shot it and another and another. Three arrows later she let her arms drop in frustration "I'm always so close yet so far! What am I doing wrong?"
He gave a small smile at her frustration. "You close an eye." He said. "And you can't expect to be perfect in an hour of being an apprentice Ranger. You need practice. But for now, you need sleep."
She grabbed all 3 arrows and placed them.back in the quiver. "I guess. I just want to be good enough to be your apprentice" She sighed walking past him and going back inside
Max looked after her for a moment, then followed, hanging his cloak back on the hook before walking to his room and going back to bed. He hadn't wanted to tell her, as it tends to make people her age too confident, but she was a lot better at archery than he was at this stage.
She sat on her bed and flopped down. She wrapped up and fell asleep until the sun came up
Max was awake as soon as the sun came up, and immediately went into the kitchen, intent on making breakfast. As soon as he was in, however, he realized that he needed water. He played with the idea for a moment of simply sending Penny down to the river to get it instead of going himself.
She rolled out of bed and quickly dressed. She walked out and stretched big "Gooooood morning!" she said and popped her head into the kitchen area "Want me to make breakfast?"
Max raised an eyebrow at her cheerfulness. "Hm?" He said. "No, I'll make breakfast. I just," He motioned to the barrel and bucket that sat on the porch by the door. "Need some water. Do you mind?"
"Yeah of course! I'll be back soon" She grabbed the bucket and started making her trips filling the barrel. She made her last trip after a little bit and sat down her arms sore.
Max couldn't help but smile as she went about collecting water. Having an apprentice was going to be nicer than he'd originally thought. Once she was done, he got the water he'd needed and made breakfast. He served it out onto two plates, walking to where she sat. He handed one to her and sat next to her, beginning to eat in silence.
She ate quickly wanting to start the fun part of the day. "Do you have a horse?" She asked between bites.
Max sighed. It was apparently too much to ask to eat in silence. Still, he was enjoying having someone to keep him company. "Of course I have a horse. But you're going to be walking there, so I left him there so we can walk together, then ride back.
She nodded eating a few more bites in silence. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again. She glanced at him then back at her food. "Is he big?"
(I'm going to be gone soon for a couple hours because I have the ACT today Dx haha )

Max sighed again, but then nearly smiled. This was definitely a step up from eating breakfast alone. "You'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" He said after a pause.((Oh, it's perfectly alright! My dad is visiting for the week, which is why I didn't think I was going to be on, so I'm probably not going to be on again until tonight lol XD))
(Okay :3)
Penny nodded and finished the rest of her breakfast in silence. She had so many questions but she decided to keep them.in for now. Taking her last bite she leaned back and stretched"Alright. I'm ready!"

Max finished off his breakfast, then stood up. He inspected her for a moment, then shook his head. "Then there's no point in waiting if you're ready." He moves out the front door and began walking, expecting her to follow.
Penny followed quickly falling in step beside him. "How far is it? " She asked glancing at him questionably
Max said nothing, simply continuing to walk. After a pause, however, he had to answer the question, even if it wasn't much of an answer. "You'll see, now won't you?"
She nodded and continued walking. "Are we almost there?" She asked kicking a small stone as she walked
Max let out a small exasperated sigh. "No, we're not." He answered. "Have patience, or you won't last long." He then lapsed into silence, slightly curious as to how she would react to this.
She went to ask something but thought against it. Penny started twisting pieces of grass together as she walked. A few minutes layer she had a long braid of woven grass and she tied its end into a bracelet.
Max glanced over at her occasionally, and eventually became curious as to what she was doing. He didn't ask though, and simply went back to watching the road as well as the land around it. After a few minutes of the distraction, he decided it would be best to just ask and get it out of the way. "What are you doing?" He asked, glancing at the twisted grass in her hands.
She glanced at him and smiled"I like weaving and braiding things. it keeps my hands busy.". She held up the woven piece " It could be a bracelet I guess. my dad took me fishing a lot so I learned it from all the knot tying and net making" She swirled the grass loop around her finger easily amusing herself
