I thought maybe a split personality. I even wondered if the wife was real or in his imagination. He was very angry and since he didn't seem to have a anyone particular to focus on, he was dangerous.
I wondered if his wife was real too, Anita. I started thinking she had been killed and he was still imagining her living with him.
Nina did kill herself in a short little chapter toward the end. That's what made me think she was really there. But I also think the "demon" was in his head as well and that maybe he had a split personality.
I think both also. He was definitely battling an inner demon and was so torn over doing the right thing. But Nina was also the demon driving him. When we learn more in the end, it's clear she's used Eric to get the revenge she wants and that's sad since it's made clear that he loved her dearly.
I never suspected Nina until the reveal. I thought that he had an inner demon like some Schizophrenics. As the story went on, I thought the car accident triggered the demon. I was right about that.It was sad when revealed that Nina was behind the murders because Eric did love her.
