Does anyone know what this book is?

I was given an extract to read in English class and it's annoying me because I really want to find out what book it is from. I'll describe what happens and names of characters so hopefully someone will be able to help me (Google was useless).

So, Caroline runs into the room and says that she's found Marcus's key. She then tells Jane (the only other person in the room) that the key is the one that Edgar talked about in his letter. It is heavily implied that Edgar either went missing or died.

Jane then sees that there are shadowy men outside the window and Caroline gets very panicked and says they will have to go to the Red Room.

I would really appreciate any help with this because it's honestly frustrating me so much <3

I haven't read this, but it might be from "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer?" I believe there's a character named Caroline in that, and mention of a red room.

I think my teacher gets the extracts from a random website that doesn't name the books but I guess I could try to find out where she got it from at least

It looks like the Red Room is something that originated from Jane Eyre, which is a start :)
Wasn't able to find a spinoff with those characters, but there's a lot of them out there, so maybe it's one of those? Hope this helps!

Thanks Anna! I originally thought it was the first chapter of Jane Eyre but I looked in my copy of it and it wasn't there so it makes sense that it could be a spinoff
