Children of Time - Thoughts?

Just started Children of Time, I'll be honest that sci-fi books aren't something I dive into very often however after seeing raving reviews I figured I'd give it a go. I appreciate that it kicks off right from the start. But I will say I am struggling a tiny bit to get into the sci-fi bits.

Would love to hear from others who've read this book and hear what their thoughts are. Is it as great as everyone says it is?
