Sarah | 7 comments Hi all :) firstly I'd like to say hi, I'm Sarah, I'm new here and have been really loving this group! I've been having a great time exchanging postcards with you lovely people, and seeing all the various postcards! I've bought a few while traveling, and recently bought a book of blank strathmore postcards to make my own, but it got me wondering where you all get yours or if you too make your own? Do you travel a lot and purchase them that way? Do you make homemade ones from pictures? Do you have a favorite spot you frequent for postcards? I'd love to start a little discussion and hear more :)

Brooklyn Harker 🌃 | 16 comments Hey Sarah! I travel a lot so I mostly get my postcards from the different places I go, but when I am sending ones to people for the first time I often send one from New River Gorge, a National Park close to where I live, or another place that is close to where I am from!

Zuzu (zuzu4141) | 70 comments I buy some off Amazon.
Also Chronicle Books sells some. They also have some on Amazon.
Museums sometimes sell them.
Some souvenir shops too.

Diana (secondhandrose) | 268 comments I collect a lot from op shops (thrift stores)

Beccabeccabooks I buy from Redbubble!!

Gaye Pietrocola (gayedoreen) | 103 comments I use Zazzle, Redbubble, PaperAndPostcrosser, VistaPrint, Changingworld, PaperSisters, and Postallove. Sometimes I get them from Etsy. If I want to make my own from photos or my own artwork, I will use Zazzle for that. I think I have a postcard for pretty much anything someone could want. I am obsessed with postcards! 😃

I have had one of Gaye’s own designed postcards and it is beautiful 😍

Luiz Fernando | 62 comments Hi there Sarah, welcome to the group!

Good matter this one you brought up. I always send postcards purchased from newsstands near the place I live. So all of them are views from my city. The problem is that as time goes by, it can get repetitive. I'm always wondering if I haven't already sent the exact same postcard to someone that posts below me. Rift surely must be tired of getting Bilbao's postcards.

I always see people telling they make their own postcards, but to be honest, I have no idea how to create a proper postcard, like the ones you buy (made of thick paper stock and with the lines for the address on the right side) but using your own pictures.

The only time I tried making my own cards was once when the month's theme was if you used to read with any pet making companie (and I do use to read with my little dog Cherry. She uses to sit on my lap next to the window on the afternoons to enjoy the sun, and in winter she is all wrapped in blankets). So what I did was: I took a picture of Cherry in my armchair, with her paws standing on an open book (as if she was reading). Then I printed some pictures in a nearby store (glossy paper was the only option available at the machine). At home, I carefully cut some sheets of standard paper of the same size and pasted it behind each picture with some glue, trying to make it as thick as possible. And there I wrote the addresses and my text. I think I made four postcards.

Those didn't seem like a proper postcard though, also the pictures tended to bend (in the way that is common with glossy paper unless you put it in a picture frame). So I was not very happy with the final result, although the people that received them said they loved it. But let's agree that was all thanks to Cherry herself.

Gaye (from whom I have received an amazing postcard once) gave me an idea to look for websites that allow you to make your own postcards. Zazzle seems perfect for what I intend. Although I'm not sure if those she mentioned will deliver here in Spain.

Oh Gaye, so kind of you for checking! Thank you so much.
I will certainly use it for my future postcards.

Love the story, Cherry sounds like a cutie! :) Funny how when we make things ourselves we seem to not love how things turn out. I made my first homemade postcard and sent it to Brooklyn and she received it with praise, though I was weary of it. I guess there is something always more special about it being made by hand. (And a sweet furry friend adds value there as well)

message 15: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Scholes | 73 comments I like to make my own with images and stickers and I've made quite a few so far, so if anyone wants me to send them some or want me to make a custom postcard, just dm me. I also like to buy unusual and funny postcards when I'm on holiday!

message 16: by Bax (new)

Bax Southard (baxsouthard) | 8 comments I make my own with various different art techniques, most recently I have been really into linocut prints! But I also buy post card sets online, at antique shops, and from vacation spots I visit. I just bought a set of literary themed postcards on Amazon that I will be using to participate in exchanges in this group, to stick with the book theme!

Alicja (140177766-alicja) | 37 comments Hey, I normally buy the postcards in places that I find interesting and the museums or zoos that I go to as well as places I travel. Whenever I buy a postcard I always think to myself would it be one I would love to receive and 9 times out of 10 I would already have a person in mind when I buy the postcard

message 18: by Tia Marie (new)

Tia Marie (tiamarienededog) | 176 comments Hi Sarah! I usually make my own postcards from photos but I will only ever use photos I have taken myself. I like to use a photo that is related to the topic of the month. Sometimes I purchase postcard sets and save my favorites to send to myself while on vacation and share the rest/duplicates with others.

I've always wanted to create my own from with multi media, but I can't seem to get the creative image from my head to my creation. Haha!

~☆~Autumn | 0 comments I buy them when we travel. It is very sad that they seem to be going out of fashion.

message 20: by Jayne (new)

Jayne M | 8 comments I find them a bit hard to find where I am in Western Australia. So I do buy from souvenir shops when we go places on holidays. Also directly from Australia Post. I have also made some of my own, and used the front side of greeting cards (mostly Australian relevant/themed, etc) as there is a lot more variety in those, than there is in the postcards I can find locally

message 21: by Ana (new)

Ana Laura | 6 comments I usually get mine online and I buy some of them when i go to places that sell postcards like museums, but I also love to make my own postcards with stickers, nail polish and watercolor paintings
