SOLVED. Fantasy about candlemaker's son becoming king. [s]

I remember reading this book as a teenager, maybe around 1995 or so. The book series was about a candlemakers son raising warhorse crescents and intelligent owls against the darkness's army. There is a Granite kind I believe that is turning to solid stone slowly. The most recognizable line I remember is the candlemakers son standing before a cave leading into the darkness and says " I am the candlemakers son and I fear nothing in the dark!"
