The characters are well-drawn, believable, and likable - or disliked when presented as such. This is also a very intelligent novel, I'm not often sent to the dictionary when reading (thank goodness for digital books!) but this one had me looking up a number of words. However, it wasn't pretentious.
This isn't just about computer games, writing, and playing, but more about friendship and love without being a "romance." Sam and Sadie meet when they are 10 and 11 years old and form a deep friendship that continues through the book into their adult years with break-ups due to misunderstandings between the two. This is also about disabilities and the strength to work through them. My other favorite character is Marx, a friend first to Sam in college and then to Sadie. Some of the story moves back and forth to fill in gaps but mostly it is a linear one.
Neither the cover nor the title would have attracted me to read this book. I picked it up initially because of the many recommendations made here and then, when I realized who wrote it, for the author.
