Sadly, my least favorite of this series so far. There was plenty of foreshadowing of the tragic ending, but the manner of the ending seemed overly contrived. Possibly, I was just hoping for a happy ending. I should have known better.

Much of the book is like a road trip. The characters travel away from Three Pines to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Again, the road trip seemed unlikely, just a plot contrivance. But, I love Penny’s descriptions of the environment so it’s all worth it.

One artist, Clara, is searching for another one, Peter. I enjoyed the artistic references. The was much musing about muses. Again, Ruth makes some of Margaret Atwood’s poetry her own. Clara and Gamache discuss the balm in Gilead and while quoting Robinson’s Gilead. I love the way that characters in this series converse about things that interest me.
