Fisface,
Maybe you have an answer this question from your experience:
One person cannot have another "committed against their will". This is something that happens on TV. Commitment is a medical decision, and the practitioner doesn't have to take law enforcement's word on the need. Even then, the patient is only detained for 72 hours (this probably varies from state to state) and must be released if qualified professionals find no reason for further detention.
So, how did this happen in the reported situation? I couldn't tell from the news article.

Well, I wasn't there, but that's probably exactly what happened. Involuntary hospitalization can happen to any of us. Having a cop's word on the petition would sound very solid to the judge. I myself had to have a friend committed once. Fortunately this woman was able to sign herself out shortly afterwards. Now, I assume, the real trouble starts. I wonder how long it took someone to notice the finger marks on her neck? Or did he tell them it was self-inflicted?

I think I knew you weren't there...
My point is that commitment of someone is a medical decision, not the family's or law enforcement (although their recommendation would carry weight). Even then, the subject can sign themselves out if a medical professional determines they are not a danger to self or others.
