I HATE the new GR homepage. Why do the powers that be keep changing things? I'm not anti-change in general, but why "fix" something that ain't broke???

message 552: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments I'm with you, Nancy. But at least they brought back the Discussion page, even if it does require a search.

Home page is too busy. But more room for ads and that's what we're here for, isn't it? Or it is what Amazon is here for.

SherryRose | 930 comments Both Jan! It's extra space for ads.
I agree with both of you. If it works why "fix" it?

It's just annoying. Seriously annoying. I can only wonder what they're going to do next.

Bill Anybody else enjoying the Olympics so far? We've got pretty good coverage with CBC and are also watching BBC coverage online.

We're not watching the Olympics, but then again, we're geeky people and not at all sports minded.

:)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments I can't turn them off. Never have been able to. My athletic days may be over but I can still enjoy watching others.

Only at this time does it sink in just how many channels are owned by NBC. Not even sure they are using all of their channels.

And I didn't even know I had Bravo in my new location.

Franky | 1040 comments Bill wrote: "Anybody else enjoying the Olympics so far? We've got pretty good coverage with CBC and are also watching BBC coverage online."

I did watch most of the opening ceremonies and thought they did a pretty awesome job with it. I'm watching a little here and there, but can't seem to focus completely.

Something totally unrelated to the Olympics in Rio. I need a graphic novel to complete a reading challenge (for various genres) for 2016. As I almost never read graphic novels, does anyone have any in mind they would recommend? (Where else should I ask this, other than the off topic thread, right). Any recommendations welcome. Thanks.

message 561: by shanghao (new)

shanghao (sanshow) | 123 comments You can try Maus (about the concentration camps in Poland during ww2, based on the recollections of the author's father). The other one that I've read and quite good is Lucifer, which is a spinoff from the original Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman.

I heard that the Watchmen series are very good too, you might want to check them out.

NBC really dominates the air waves for sure!

Stephanie Hutabarat | 1093 comments Did anyone already watch "The Night Of" series? I missed the first episode, so i am planning to watch it from the beginning. One of the producer is James Gandolfini, and since i love The Sopranos, i bet i will love the series. It's on TV everyday morning, but couple episodes already running. So, i am planning to buy the DVD.

It takes some getting used to. I don't like the layout at all.

message 565: by Faith (last edited Aug 07, 2016 09:13AM) (new)

Faith | 136 comments Re graphic novels:

I loved all three Sanny mentioned. Others that I've enjoyed a lot include "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel and "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi, which are both autobiographical.

Moving to some of the fantasy and/or horror I've liked a lot, there's "Hellboy" by Mike Mignola (far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with anything Mignola wrote) and "Swamp Thing" once Alan Moore started writing it, I think in the mid 1980s. "Locke & Key" by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez has a devoted following. My son loved those but I haven't read them yet.

Bet you're beginning to be sorry you asked - I do go on! My father was a serious comic book collector so I grew up reading the classics, along with a lot of mindless junk. When graphic novels became popular it kind of felt like going home for me, but I know a lot of people are put off by them.

Franky | 1040 comments sanny and Faith, thanks for the recommendations. Will look into those :)

message 567: by Bill (new)

Bill Re graphic novels, you could also try The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1 by Alan Moore . There are a number of them.

message 568: by Bill (new)

Bill I've been enjoying the events so far. Our CBC coverage is sort of spotty, at times they seem to be avoiding the Canadian performers. My niece (my nephew's wife) is at the games, working as a family support person. We saw her sitting beside the family of one our swimmers tonight.. Cool.. :)

Reminiscent of John Wayne Gacy, although I don't know if he used his clown outfit to lure people. Wouldn't candy work better than money?

A friend told me that he had a friend who Gacy had tried to lure in a drug store. He didn't go with him though.

Candy vs money might be dependent on age of the kid? That's just wrong, though...what next, Santa Claus?

Not sure I ever got over my fear of clowns and Santa Claus.

message 593: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments I never cared for clowns..but not scared of them.
I am Jewish, so Santa was never part of my "mindset". Although, when I was about 7-8, I personally traumatized a younger child. Just before 'Christmas, I was wandering around the clothing racks while my Mom looked at stuff. I encountered another child who asked me if I was excited about Santa coming. Apparently I bluntly told her I didn't believe in Santa or I didn't know who he was. She went crying to her Mom who screamed at me and my Mother. In my defense, I was very small for my age and very very socially awkward.

That's so sad. I told my kids from the start that Santa was make believe and it's OK to pretend if you want. My daughter told her classmates he wasn't real..oops! I didn't think to tell them not to say anything. She got yelled at by the teacher which wasn't fair.

My sister found out late in life and promptly came home and told her younger brother and her little sister (moi) overheard. I was probably around 5 or so. I'm sure my parents tried to tell me she was mistaken. But they weren't happy with her that day.

message 599: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 930 comments It's kind of a stunner when kids find out the truth about Santa. I learned from a friend at school. I remember feeling stupid because she knew and I didn't. Lol

message 600: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments Remembering being puzzled, confused and downright sympathetic towards my friends who believed a bunny rabbit went around giving away candy and hiding eggs. Luckily, I kept my mouth shut here. Later in life, (20s) I had to dress up as the Easter Bunny. Scared the @#$ out of more kids than I thrilled. Makes sense, I was a 5 foot, (6ft inc the ears, rabbit. Come ON!
