The cover of the printing I’m thinking of shows a woman disembarking a silvery spaceship against a blue background where a male wearing some type of gaudy cape (colorful with a standup collar) appears to be waiting to greet her. It was purchased in SC from a BDalton bookstore in mass market paperback.
The female protagonist was sentenced to work as a 3D calligrapher (she was scanned / evaluated and it was determined to be something she would be skilled at but not enjoy, hence punishment, though she perversely finds a certain satisfaction in it) on a new-to-her world. When she arrives she has no recollection of her supposed crime or her prior life—her memories were taken from her as part of the “rehabilitation” of the judicial system—she only knows the training she’s received for the work that is to be her sentence.
Things happen and she gets dragged (at first unwillingly) into espionage for some type of rebellion / revolution by the seemingly silly (but really not) man who is referenced on the cover. The rebellion is righteous and eventually her memories do return though I don’t remember how, or in what way her history connects to her new circumstances (though it does somehow).
Help???
