Amy | 12912 comments I actually really liked it. I thought it was brilliantly written, very intelligent and cleverly done. The characters were quirky and complex and there was a lot of trauma underscoring the movement of the plot, both in the characters history and current story.

Not being a gamer, I was really surprised by the intelligence, metaphor, trauma, and humanity in the games - and in 1994. I really had no idea that people can use these virtual worlds in this way, to work out moral dilemmas, or exercise compassionate politics and social worlds. I don't know why I was so surprised at the sheer intelligence and internal connectivity of it. That is one of the elements that stayed with me as I was reading it.

The characters themselves were wounded and sometimes socially awkward, but very very real and complex. There was deep friendship and intimacy woven into their games and lives. I was moved by Sam and Sadie and Marx and their immutable threesome. They were inextricably woven and bound. It was a fascinating, beautiful, moving read.
