The Science of Sci-Fi question

Goodreads made me choose a book, but this question is not about this specific book. Several years ago, I read a trilogy that was free on I believe Amazon, but now cannot find it to save my life. I'm hoping someone here may recognize it based off what I remember. I'm pretty certain it was a sci-fi trilogy. There was a guy who met a woman who happened to be a descendant of some sort of being (ancient beings or aliens, can't remember). They discovered either a ship or ruins of some sort that she was able to access since she was a distant descendant of said race of beings. I can remember bits and pieces of it, but cannot remember the main story line. I believe the beings were communicating with her somehow, and they were able to use the ship/ruins to transport somewhere else. Does this ring any bells or anyone read something like this before, and remember the titles and/or author? It's been bugging me that I CANNOT find it!
