Started! In the beginning of Chapter 4 (view spoiler)[ im so glad it picked up right where it left off essentially... Balam is the Jaguar clan guy who got Xiala out of prison to take Serapio right? What is his role now that he thinks Serapio did his job...

This is hitting exactly the right note for me right now. I just got finishing a really slow-paced book and, while I really enjoyed that one, the faster pace here is exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm up to Chapter 15 now. I'm reading pretty quickly... but is it just me, or has like, (view spoiler)[nothing happened so far? Still sort of waiting for things to happen.

I'm glad Ikthan survived the purge! Of course xe would. But what is xe up to? Doing audio so not sure of the pronoun spelling. I'm surprised xe's not trying to find Nurapa.... does xe know she's alive?

I'm a little confused on exactly what is happening in Tova... but then I guess everyone is? The Sun Priests were sort of... like the government? I thought they were just the religious leaders.... and now they're gone, so... why isn't there more chaos? (hide spoiler)]

Finished... I didn't like this one as much as the first... but that could also be that I did audio as a reread for our BR of #1, and audio for initial read this time, and I'm still having trouble sometimes with audio. I think I'd've appreciated it more if I eye-read. (view spoiler)[It just didn't feel like anything happened until the last 5 chapters of the book or so... like most of the story could've been put into a prologue for the next book. (hide spoiler)]

Wow, you are speedy. Life is majorly getting in the way of my reading right now. I'm just past chapter 7.

It does seem like the pace has dropped off quite a bit.

The book's not that long on audio... at 2x speed it was like 6 hours or so?

I had a hard time with this one maybe the first 3/4ths of the book. But it picked up a bit toward the end. (view spoiler)[ I think the best part was the character development in this because there was very little plot... There was some cool magic-happenings that were fun to picture...

I was a little disappointed by Xiala's past reveal.. I was really into that, but she kind of broke it up into multiple parts so I was less invested by the time we got most of the story. I think she might be different from the other Teeks? (Teaks?) because of her mermaid form... She seemed to be kind of freaked out about that. Also her power seemed to be stronger. I am looking forward to more of her story.

And Ikthan surviving wasn't too much of a surprise for me. Xe already set precedent with sending someone else in xier place. I am also not sure about the spelling of the pronouns here.

The ending with Crowgod dude resurrecting an army was honestly pretty cool! I hope he holds the city against the outsiders!
I'm also interested where Naranpa will go to learn about her god-given powers. The clash between the avatars was interesting, especially about how its been played out many times. The sun god seems to have been on top for a while, I guess the crow god gets his chance now. I wonder if the crow god actually had a hand in keeping Serapio alive because otherwise he would have been a disposable tool for Balaam to take Tova. I don't think the crow god would care very much for Balaam's plans, yaknow? (hide spoiler)]

I really like all your questions, Emily--and totally agree about the 3/4ths point. I really hope the next book gets a little more into the magical background...

I’m still lagging on this one, but I’m through some of the life stuff now that was keeping me from doing anything but work, eat and sleep. Heading to the lake for a week, so hoping I can do some catch up!

Done now and I have a couple of thoughts:
1. I feel like this did fill in a number of gaps. There were pieces of background that I actually would have expected to be in book 1, because they seem kind of foundational, but that you're only hearing about now. (view spoiler)[ For example, the whole thing with how the treaty came to be with the Dreamwalkers and everything. (hide spoiler)]

2. I think the first one was actually the better read. At the very least, it used tension better.
The first one, you ran up and down the timeline, but you had the general countdown to the eclipse adding a feeling of urgency. This was very much an 'aftermath' book.

But maybe the backed off pace is ultimately good for the story. I feel like a lot of this was set up for the big finale in book 3.
