When Carrie leaves for a university across the country, she feels guilt and concern over leaving Avery after raising her like her own. Did you feel as though Carrie had reason for concern? Is her guilt over pursuing her own life legitimate? Why or why not?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Carrie just wanted away. I understand that. Yes. she had reason for concern, but Avery wasn't her child, even though Carrie has deep feelings for her. Something in Carrie prevented her from being 100% there for Avery.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I understand her guilt after the fact. Carrie has to live her own life. She had plans that included Avery and her mother, but she needed the educational foundation to meet her goals. I don't think Carrie thought that Jilly would return. There wasn't anyway to predict that she would ever want Avery.

Agreed. Carrie had to leave to get the educational platform that would enable her to earn a living and care for her mother & Avery in the future. She had no way of knowing Jilly would return.

Jessica | 156 comments I understand why Carrie would feel guilt, but Jilly would have found a way to get to Avery even if Carrie had stayed.
