I've started the book yesterday, and oooh Bardugo's writing style is so good!
I was afraid the book was only about political issues, but I'm glad Nikolai has other (super big) worries.
I missed him so much <3
In Chapter 3 I needed to search who Adrik and Lioni were... I remembered that Adrik was Nadia's brother, and Lioni's name was familiar... she's the little girl Jesper's mother saved before dying!

I also can stop and wait for you if you want!
Chapter 7

hey y'all! unfortunately work has been a little crazy over the last few days but things should begin to calm down here in a bit! I'm hoping to start the book either today or tomorrow though :) don't worry Bopeep, I won't leave you hanging! we've journeyed through this series together so far, and we'll finish it together :D
omg, @lexus, the anticipation of a new book is the best lol. excited to see how this one turns out!

But @Lexus yay for the book coming tomorrow (today??) !!! I think this will be worth it. I MEAN, it has Nikolai on it.
@Edith I knew you wouldn't leave me alone! Haha I just wanted to know if I should slower my pace so you two can catch up and then we can go together making theories~
lol don't feel bad Bopeep, I'll catch up sooner or later! I'm halfway through ch. 3, Nina's pov and I feel kinda bad for her because she's left with this big loss at the end of crooked Kingdom and she comes across as very lonely throughout this chapter. I'm curious to see how she'll handle her grief throughout the book though

Have been avoiding this thread until I’ve been kind of caught up lol…so far I’m halfway through chapter 11, and I gotta say, the intro felt a little slow to me but now it’s definitely picking up.

I agree! While I’m not really a romance reader, parts of Nina’s chapters in which she is grieving for Matthias make me tear up so much. I can’t help but think about my husband and what I would do in her situation and then it starts a cycle of me being on the verge of more tears…especially listening to the audiobook. The narrator does a great job of conveying the heavy feelings of Nina’s loss—sometimes a little too well.

@Lexus Have you read the other books or watched the show? I'm curious since you said this wasn't your usual style of books~
@Edith Chapter 11
(view spoiler)
I've read chapter 21 and ooooh a lot of things are happening. But I will say... poor Isaak hahaha
PD: My gf is reading Shadow and Bone now, and after reading the series, more things of the first book make sense to me hahaha I told her that she mentions me the characters that appear and what happens.
(I forgot that Alina's light activated when she was holding Mal, and now THAT MAKES SENSE!)

So I've definitely fallen a bit behind due to my other buddy read (I've learned that I'm definitely NOT a 2+ book girl lol), but some thoughts so far...
Nikolai: I like seeing him "vulnerable" in this book. It's really interesting to see his motives behind a lot of the decisions he makes as the king. His trust in Zoya makes him an even better character in my opinion because it seems like he is the only one who can really reach her icy demeanor.
Zoya: FINALLY we are seeing her as more human compared to the other books. I'm really enjoying her characterization far more in this series. I loved the part where she stuck up for her aunt, Alina, Genya, even poor dead Harshaw... against the pilgrims. It's weird but I like seeing that she really cares for these people.
@Bopeep, I now understand your shipping for Nina and Hanne. Lowkey I am starting to ship them too hahaha. And yes, that happened to me while I was watching the new season of shadow and bone this past month!!! I didn't make the connection you did with Mal at first but now it TOTALLY makes sense!!!! T___T

Yep! Is a low key shipping for now, but it seems they can be something at some point.
@Edith I needed to focus too to make the connection! hahaha
Also, I've read some bits and pieces of Shadow & Bone and I forgot how hypocrite all the Grishas were when they lived in the palace and all went well for them.
Plus they forbid Zoya to enter the training arena lol It's super fun comparing Zoya in the first book vs this one.
So finally I feel like I can join a bit to your conversations about the books.
Yes to Zoya! When I was reading KoS I wasn't really remembering Zoya from the S&B books because I read it a long time ago, but I remember her being like a meany and that she wasn't one of the likable characters. Seeing her here and seeing her grow it's so amazing. I love her.
One other character that I wasn't that fond of in SoC was Nina, I don't know why but I was meh about her even though everyone was crazy about her and waffles.. However, in Kos I started liking her. This book should be about Nikolai.. and funny thing, I didn't care much about him as I was looking forward the most to Nina's and Zoya's chapters.

Oof I'm still not really enjoying Nina. I like her plot, but it stresses me out hahaha
And you're right about Nikolai, @mina, we all came here for him (someone disagrees? haha) but his plot isn't as engaging. And his slow burn for Zoooyaaa 👀 He's still so cute and awesome.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH
(I don't think that's enough "a" but close)
