I was hoping someone might be in the mood to add this book? Bookel just solved a thread re: Mystery of the Silent Friends, which looks rather good and is on OpenLibrary.
Also on OL is "Mystery of the Marco Polo Ring" by the same author:
Mystery of the Marco Polo ring
Authors:Robin Gottlieb, Mimi Korach (Illustrator)
Summary:A girl travels with her aunt, uncle and cousin to Venice, where they hope to find a missing great uncle. Following a tip received from an old woman known as the Oracle, the girls find themselves in a mystery involving a ring with a curse
Publisher:Funk & Wagnalls, New York, ©1968
128 pages : illustrations ; 21 cm
https://www.worldcat.org/title/436934...
Sadly the only cover is on OL. https://openlibrary.org/works/OL15838...

Some of her other books lack covers. If you ever come across them... Not that I'm encouraging you to waste time over an author who almost certainly isn't worth it.

No, no - they won't be prioritized. :) The automaton antique shop mystery (which does have a cover) looked fun, though!

It sounds neat but Funk &Wagnall's... I dunno.

In your opinion, does Good Publisher (usually)= Good Stories?
Or is Funk & Wagnall especially dreadful? I'm trying to think if I have any of theirs...
I'm one of those skeptical sorts who show no* brand loyalty at the supermarket, and will happily buy a cheaper product if it is as good or better than the other. >:) I get a sick satisfaction knowing that I'm ignoring the work of a Marketing Team somewhere (bite me!). I like price to correlate exactly with quality (or environmental friendliness/sustainability/humane considerations), but, of course, that's never the way it works.. ;)
*except in cases of known allergen avoidance
So I'm more willing to show fealty to a proven author than a publishing house... though even that's let me down too many times to count!
Should I try finding a favourite publisher and reading new books that way? :)

Funk & Wagnall's was primarily a publisher of educational and reference works. By the time these Gottlieb books were published F&W was owned by Reader's Digest. Make of that what you will. My inclination is to say that they're pedestrian but perhaps that's unfair and reflects my tastes rather than the books' quality. The covers don't inspire confidence. Heh.
In the past, I'd have said that there's absolutely a connection between publisher and quality or maybe editor and quality. The Ballantine Adult Fantasy series of the late 60s and early 70s is a good example and also the Margaret K. McElderry authors of the same period. Now, I don't know, although when I buy a book from Valancourt or Tartarus or Subterranean Press I know more or less what I'm going to get. It's the difference between curated collections and books chosen because they'll sell and appeal to current tastes. McElderry chose only what she liked, but think of it - Susan Cooper, Margaret Mahy, Eleanor Estes...

I had forgotten about McElderry - I had already noted that everything published by her I have liked!! Thanks for that reminder.
Oof, Reader's Digest... that's a stretch too far for even me. XD

There's something really odd happening with this page:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Best of Shadows
My review disappeared, my rating disappeared, even from 'my books' (listed as read, but no rating given, no review). Was only able to see and repost my review (which was lengthy!) after 'editing my activity' - all the text was there, just hidden. With comments from both Len and myself, too. It was all there, just... not. :S
And the cover is gone... at least, I thought it was added. It's still in my profile pics, anyway:
https://images.gr-assets.com/photos/1...

Would a kindly passing Librarian mind adding it? I can give all the pertinent info again, too:
The Best of Shadows

"A Chilling Collection of Ghostly Tales by such Masters as JOAN AIKEN, JOSEPHINE POOLE, EWART ALEXANDER"
ISBN 0552520969

I've added the image. Goodreads now regularly reimports information (I believe), rewriting entries that were previously correct. I know, because I make sure everything about every book I add is correct, and I've found dozens that are now incorrect. Everything from pictures disappearing to author and title changing. It's maddening.
Not sure what's going on with your review. For what it's worth, I am able to see it.
Thank you very much, Abigail! I actually did wonder if it was an automatic update thing, and I'm glad you mentioned that, because there was another incidence where I wondered if that had happened (my laboriously uploaded and photographed covers replaced by worse Amazon images, for example!).
Thanks very much! :) And thanks for letting me know that it's back, too! I wrote out all the contents for that one, would be sad if it vanished!

Another request, if anyone has the time and expertise:
9780571081332 - The Stone Sorcerer
&
9780571113286 - Stone Wizard
should probably be connected to each other somehow and not remain as disparate entities, yes? :)
If anyone knows how to combine (?) or whatever the correct terminology is, since they are two editions of the same book, I'd be most grateful.
(This series is AWESOME, btw - straight onto my Favourites shelf! <3 Worth checking out!)

A very kind GR friend of mine just sent me a message about a Margaret MacAlpine book I hadn't reviewed (?!). But it was just Dougal And The Wee Folk, the U.S. release of The Hand in the Bag. :)
If anyone with the powers to do so could combine those two editions, I'd be grateful. Can't be too many users who are stumbling upon them these days, but you know how it is. :)
(The paper trail for the editions is here, if needed: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... )

What is WITH Amazon, importing in titles and data that is just plain WRONG?!
Example: "Mystery at the Museum" by Betty Cavanna, 9780688150013
Which now links to: "Phonogram Cards: The Writing Road to Reading" as the title, but retained the 'Mystery at the Museum' cover, thankfully!
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
This was NOT incorrect when I added it to "books in Boston"!
Apparently this sort of thing is happening all the time.. >:p
I'd be most grateful if someone could amend that title. In the meantime, seriously, what is the deal?! ISBN mismatches, no doubt? Or sloppy sellers who aren't bibliophiles?!
Irritating!

I've got an edition of The Night-Watchmen by Helen Cresswell that seems to link to a hardcover by MacMillan, in spite of it being a paperback Puffin from 1987.
ISBN 0140308512

124 pages
Puffin
It has this cover (can't link image alone): https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/the-n... and I think it must be an alt. cover for a shared ISBN. But just for ref's sake. I suppose I could take a photo for upload, but probably won't get around to it today. :)

Ellie and the Hagwitch

'Ellie stood helplessly watching the snow fall. She tried to conjure up the roses in bloom beyond, the trees in full summer leaf, the long grasses. She clung desperately to this picture, as if by thinking of it long enough, she could actually re-make it, could halt that cold relentless fall.'
But the darkness grew.
The snow thickened and Ellie knew that the hagwitch had begun her attack. First there had been the cats, then Ellie's mother and father had disappeared and now the snow had come.
As this enthralling fantasy unfolds, the hagwitch tries to lure Ellie to her, knowing that with the girl in her grasp her power will be complete . . .'

Hi Clare,
It used to be that anyone could, but they changed it. And they don't seem to want any more librarians... and the lead librarian in the Librarian's Group (for adding covers, anyway - Martin) has refused to serve me again. ;)
So I have to ask here. :)

'Moron' is a strong word these days. If you put it in a tweet, Twitter asks if you're sure you want to use it. It could have something to do with not putting it into circulation although that sounds like a personal copy, not an unsold book that's been stripped. This would be a question for a publisher.
