SOLVED. Sci-fi about several characters who takes control of a spaceship. Read around 2000.

The book is about several characters who ends up being transported by a "tyrannical?" pilot who they eventually subdue. The cover of the edition I read showed a native looking inside a mountain crater which showed faces. This mountain was considered sacred.

One of the characters was a genius girl who eventually found out she was arranged to marry but she escaped or tried to escape.

I read this around 2000 but it could have been written before that. I'm afraid this is book 1 of a series.

Updated: I remember that the native got so sick, a woman (an outcast?) nursed him back to health.
