Colin (colinalexander) | 379 comments If we are talking about Lord of the Rings, my understanding is that Tolkien wrote it as a single, long book, however, the publisher broke it into three books on the basis that no one would read such a long fantasy. This, of course, was in the 1950's (I think that was the decade) and preferences were different. Today, really long books do sell.

in France, the Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was initially in two parts in paperback for that reason

I cried my eyes out hearing about Sir Terry, that he'll only tell his stories to *DEATH* from now on...

Malissa (malissa1578) | 12 comments For me it's not about the number and more about the reason for them. I love a good series, but there are some that never needed to be a series and they just drug on the story in ways that were unnecessary.
