If we are talking about Lord of the Rings, my understanding is that Tolkien wrote it as a single, long book, however, the publisher broke it into three books on the basis that no one would read such a long fantasy. This, of course, was in the 1950's (I think that was the decade) and preferences were different. Today, really long books do sell.

I wish some of the series I love would never end...I cried my eyes out hearing about Sir Terry, that he'll only tell his stories to *DEATH* from now on...
