2. Shuffle scares me - it's so...random. I have playlists for mood, and playlists for specific artists' albums, although not many of those because I prefer to set up music based around moods or activities. I don't listen to radio - recycled airplay has never been my thing.
3. Oh I remember the 80s and my boombox *sigh* good times. These days I don't like to share my music. It's probably going to sound a bit precious but my music playlists make sense to nobody but me. I chucked the iPod earbuds (they irritate me) and use headphones instead.
What I listen to depends on what and where I'm reading at the time. For example, when reading J. R. Ward I listen to rap music, and usually explicit rap music at that. Probably because she lists a fair few rap songs/artists throughout her novels. M/M novels make me want to listen to CCR for some reason (I've never tried to figure that out) or 1970s rock music and general romance fiction makes me reach for more modern male or female vocals - preferably acoustic. Jazz music or swing often appears when I'm reading and, for some strange reason, country. When reading on public transport I try (but don't always succeed) to be a little more circumspect in my reading/music choices because I've found that ppl will often ask me what I'm doing, what I'm reading, can they look at it, what I'm listening to and don't I think that ebooks will single-handedly destroy physical books? There is something about me that ppl feel they can ask these questions - if I knew what I was channeling I'd stop it o_O

When I do listen to music, I pull up one of my "all instrumental" playlists off of iTunes. My favorites are E.S. Posthumus and instrumental versions of 30 Seconds to Mars songs.
Usually, I just use the speakers on my computer. But, if I'm away from home, headphones, not earbuds.

2) I seperate all my music based on the genre I feel it fits in (I say that because they label some music as a certain genre when it really isn't!) because I'm OCD when it comes to music. However, when I'm reading I put my ipod on shuffle and kind of play the challenge of matching songs to the book. Ex: matching 'Boom boom pow' to "Gone With the Wind"
3) I listen to all my music through a casette connector for my ipod on my boom box. The boom box is about 10 years old, but I absolutely love the structure and quality of it. I refuse to update!

2) I'm a shuffle fan. I plug my ipod into my car stereo and just hit shuffle. If I'want to listen to my music without disturbing hubby or anyone else, I prefer headphones. Earbud just p*** me off
3) a/a

1. Do you listen to music when you have your reading time or do you prefer sterile mind numbing silence?
Most of the time I like to have it quiet when I read. I've found that I can read while my boyfriend is playing video games but having music on is just too distracting. On the other hand though I do tend to listen to music while doing homework, but it's almost always instrumental only. I'm studying Japanese though so I've found that I can listen to Spanish-language music at the same time and not be bothered by the words. I understand some Spanish but only if I really pay attention. At the moment I'm really liking Nelly Furtado's spanish CD, you can listen to it here if you're interested!
2. If you have taste and listen to music while reading, do you try to match music to what you are reading or do you allow the randomness of a shuffle or *gasp* radio station dictate the soundtrack?
I probably haven't listened to the radio in almost 10 years. Can't stand it. Sometimes if I need a little pick-me-up to get going on my homework I'll listen to something more upbeat, but still instrumental. A good example right now is Rodrigo y Gariela's new CD, if you're curious you can listen to most of it on last.fm.
3. Headphones vs earbuds - what's your take? Or are you one of those boombox on the shoulder, share your LL Cool J with the world, be ready for a Say Anything moment type of person?
I've got my own office in my house and my music only bothers my boyfriend if it's rattling the ceiling when he's down in his office working. He falls asleep with the TV on a lot so my music never bothers him, I'm actually kind of jealous he can sleep through so much noise.
But when I listen to my shuffle while riding my bike I use earbuds.

2. Usually I listen to the radio, a particular station that plays Greek slow music. I do go through phases when I want to hear one specific CD all the time. My latest obsession was the soundtrack of Les Miserables, which I played for 2 months non-stop.
3. I only use earbuds in the office, so as not to disturb my co-workers. All other times, it's me and the speakers:)

2. The exception to the above is when I'm reading in the car when waiting for kids to finish school, I will listen to CDs on low volume. Too easily distracted otherwise. Nickelback and Theory of a Dead Man are my preferred music of choice in my vehicle.
3. Earbuds and shuffle - when I'm walking the dog :)

2. I have a at least 40 or 50 different play lists and they fall under for basic categories. Driving, Reading, Gym, and Public transportation. For reading I usually try to match the music with the book, based on stuff I already have. I won't download anything special). Like BDB require some form of rap and/or hip hop, StormBorn/Thorn Queen was a lot of 80s hair music, including Def Leppard, Rachel gibson bounced between hair music and country music depending on the book. Nickelback is my default PNR music, I don't know why, it just is. And if an author talks about a lot of music in the book, I'll start create a new list and start dropping songs into it.
3. I have weird shaped ears apparently because I can't keep those ipod earbuds in my ears. But I headphones are too big to deal with in my bag or pocket, so I have those sports over-the-ear things that are somewhere between earbuds and head phones. But unless I'm outside of my apartment, I prefer to use my computer speakers.
Oh and I'm the same as you Jim in regards to the radio, in my car on short trips (The driving playlists are for the long drives I make every couple of months.) I also listen when I'm doing things like cleaning and packing. Or if I'm at work and don't have my ipod, I will turn on pandora.

2. If i did play music while i read i would shuffle because i am all about chaos and being random. I love it when i am cleaning house or at work to have my mp3 player to play NIN one second and then the very next song be Carrie Underwood...lol
3. when i am listening to my mp3 player it is usually because i am working in the yard, hiking in the foothill or some other activity and i hate the bulkiness of headphone so i use the ear buds. At work and home when i am not using my mp3 player i either have a cd playing in my computer or pandora playing music and i just use my computer speakers.
1. Do you listen to music when you have your reading time or do you prefer sterile mind numbing silence? (I'm not trying to voice my opinions in the questions. honest)
2. If you have taste and listen to music while reading, do you try to match music to what you are reading or do you allow the randomness of a shuffle or *gasp* radio station dictate the soundtrack? (I'm pretty sure that is a run-on sentence, but we're going to go with it for now.)
3. Headphones vs earbuds - what's your take? Or are you one of those boombox on the shoulder, share your LL Cool J with the world, be ready for a Say Anything moment type of person?
I guess I'll stop at three questions. Same number as wishes and the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop. (If you think those two things both equalling three is a coincidence, you are sorely mistaken.)
Notice that I didn't ask WHAT you listen to. I'll save the music genre debate for another time. I'm just looking for your listening while reading habits. Of course if you have any interesting stories you'd like to share, I'm sure we'd all like to hear. (I know that person is out there that listens to nothing but William Shatner music while reading Star Trek slashfiction. I can't be blamed if you admit to it, but I know you are out there.)
