Holy wow, I'm tied with Ellen for the bracket contest for #1 today! Uncanny! I know that will probably change though, as my guess for tomorrow is 'Nightcrawling' which is already out.
And I could be wrong, but it looks like NO ONE in our bracket contest has guessed that The Book of Goose would make it to the final two (neither did I)... so we shall see if it DOES make it to the final two!
I had the Book of Goose doing distance until the 11th hour I switched them to losing to Seven Moons, I even put in a thread somewhere that it felt like a perfect ToB book but alas, this Purdue alum was not destined for joy this March.

Nadine in NY wrote: "... I can't remember, but I think I voted for Sea of Tranquility as a zombie, so ... that made no difference hahaha!!"Right? Picking the zombies is especially tough, because you have to first predict they will have previously lost. Tough one.
Do we already know that JoDee is the winner, or is it possible for Jessica Maria to win if Babel wins? It looks like no one guessed Goose would win. Maybe both of you want to make/clean up a "want to read" shelf for us to pick from as your prize? :)
JoDee wrote: "Didn’t Babel win today though? I don’t agree with the decision but I think Babel did win."Oh my gosh, you are so right. I'm a doofus. Fixing everything now.
Correcting my earlier erroneous post, which I have now deleted.Nobody can overtake Jessica Maria for the win in the bracket contest tomorrow. Congratulations Jessica Maria!!!
(Kyle does continue to hold on to the Hoover; he can't be outdone.)
I'm sure this has been obvious to everyone else, but I just now realized: Sea of Tranquility knocked Babel: An Arcane History out in the first round, and then Babel came back against SoT and, like a true zombie, knocked SoT out.
Was yesterday’s match supposed to be worth 16 points? Congratulations to the Book of Goose, which I didn’t think would beat The Passage but really loved!
JoDee wrote: "Was yesterday’s match supposed to be worth 16 points? ..."So . . . in setting up the bracket spreadsheet, I just used the formulas from the past years' bracket competitions. But I think the basis of the 16 points for yesterday's round is: 4 points for correctly predicting the outcome of a zombie round; plus, because it was an upset, the 4-point value of the round multiplied by the seed differential (in this instance, a 3 point difference) -- altogether then, 4 + 12 = 16.
Nadine in NY wrote: "I'm sure this has been obvious to everyone else, but I just now realized: Sea of Tranquility knocked Babel: An Arcane History out in the first round, and then Babel ..."I picked it the exact opposite way. Oh, well.
Congrats on your win, Jessica Maria! Let us know when you have a shelf of "want to read" books that don't include ones you already have. Then those of us who are able to, will DM you to get a shipping address where we'll send one of those books as a surprise. :)And congrats to Maggie who won my March newsletter giveaway! She picked Cantoras, one of my all-time favorites. <3
in the spirit of Rooster winners deciding to donate their actual roosters, I will donate my Hoover to the nearest Little Free Library.

Jessica wrote: "Wait... I won??? LOL I was just coming in this chat to check out who the winner was and did NOT expect to see my name!!!"Yes - congrats! Is your "to read" shelf all books that you do not currently own? If so I think I spotted the one I want to send you as your prize. :)

I added you as a friend so I could send you a message :)
There is no good place to post this question, but since this in the most active thread, I’ll post it here: Any idea if there will be a summer camp TOB this year? I hope so, but I feel like we would’ve already heard something?
Gwendolyn wrote: "There is no good place to post this question, but since this in the most active thread, I’ll post it here: Any idea if there will be a summer camp TOB this year? I hope so, but I feel like we would..."I was also wondering... Since last year had such limited discussion (I blame Discord and the books being selected by popular vote, which I know seems counterintuitive, but...) and so many complaints that I wouldn't be surprised if the organizers take a break.
I can move this to the 2024 contenders thread, but I haven't had any knocked-it-out-of-the-park, five-star (2023 lit fic) reads yet this year (where I've had multiple by this time the past few years), so I guess I'm not sure what I'd be eager to see in summer camp yet, although I've read a handful of four-star books that could spark a great discussion.
Edit: Now that I've looked at my Goodreads history for the year, I see that I gave five stars to Maame, Endpapers, and Vanishing Maps. Also, I'm reading Carmen and Grace: A Novel right now, and it definitely has five-star potential. And I thought the first half/two-thirds of Inside the Wolf was one of the best books I've ever read (especially craft-wise), but it didn't quite stick the landing for me.
Lauren, I agree that the popular vote method doesn’t seem quite the best for summer camp. Now, if the organizers want to give us a curated long list of about 15 titles, and we choose from those, I think that could work. I feel like they used to do that before it went to us suggesting the titles that ended up on the list that got voted on. We’ll, if there’s no summer camp, I suppose it will free up my reading a bit, which is always nice. As far as five star reads go, I have two recent ones, but they were books from last year, which doesn’t help us here: Demon Copperhead and The Marriage Portrait. Those were both incredible books.
That was my preferred setup for camp as well, since it gave us a more diverse, less “heavy hitter” outcome. And Demon Copperhead is definitely on my list! Thanks for sharing the recs. :)
Somehow, my RL had me completely forgetting about the bracket contest until...just now. Since I have no memory whatsoever of how I filled out the bracket, I am shocked...shocked! to see that for much of the middle of the Tournament, I was actually IN. THE. LEAD. But congratulations to Jessica, who seems to have edged me out! I certainly think there will be summer camp, but I agree that popular vote filling the roster hasn't worked. And, of course, neither did Discord.
