I started this morning! I am listening to the audio and following along in my hardback edition. I love the illustrations in the hard copy. Also, the audio is full cast, so that's great. I only made it a couple of sections into the first part, so we are just meeting the characters. The first section, we meet Libby and her interactions with Nico were giving me Hermione and Draco fanfic feel; I wasn't mad about it. I love some academic rivals!
I made it to 38% earlier tonight. I got a lot of audiobook time in while walking the dog, making dinner, etc. I am really enjoying it so far; it has completely sucked me in.The characters are fun, I think currently Nico is my favorite, and I think Blake is setting up the world nicely. There are a lot of different directions the story could go. I'm interested to get further.
Of course it is giving me The Magicians vibes too, which is a plus.
Today I made it to 48% in the audiobook. If i remember correctly, I am in the 'Time' section. I won't include any spoilers here, I just wanted to mention how impressed I am with this magic system/development. I'm not sure why, but I think just because the way this one was hyped, I sort of expected a popcorn fantasy, at best, but it is actually pretty complex and well imagined. I'm looking forward to continuing on with this series already!
I'm currently at 63% of audiobook and am finding myself becoming quite attached to these characters. Libby especially, who I wasn't crazy about at first, I now feel oddly protective over her. I'm not sure why, but she feels so much more innocent than the other players in this little game. Also, (view spoiler)
Non-Spoilery observation: I am not at 70% of the audiobook and there are certain sections that involve a lot of dialogue surrounding their magic and the parameters of what they are will to do, like thought tests, my eyes do glaze over a bit during these periods...
I finished! Whoaaaa, a lot was revealed since my last update. I'm not sure I understand every detail, but I am definitely gobsmacked by the bigger picture. I cannot wait to continue on with this series. This turned out to be way better than I expected. I am not sure why I had sort of low expectations for this, but I thought the characters and magic system were very well thought out and presented. I look forward to seeing what others think of this one. I've read no other reviews thus far.
