I think as long as you are actively reading the book and posting updates the thread will be active :) So like you dont need to start and finish it within a certain time frame, you could read the book over the next 3 weeks and as long as you (and/or others) are still actively posting updates it'll count! - thats my understanding anyway, hopefully someone can correct if this is wrong haha

This is how I always do my buddys and I always get the points for the buddy. We can start it up to 7 days early and comment up to 14 days after the start date or the last comment whatever one gives you more time.
