I'm curious about how this book compares to de Maurier's other works. I question this after seeing the YouTube video describing her life and other books. (I was lukewarm about Rebecca too, so it's probably me!)I think the ending gave the reader all of the brutality you were expecting throughout the book at the hand of Mr. Merlyn.
Would I consider this a favorite? No, but I would like to see the film version of it.
Looking forward to more comments!
Hi everyone. This is Glenda. I’m a prolific commenter but don’t have a channel. I’m 72 and a life long reader albeit my tastes have definitely changed over the years. I still really like a deep but heartwarming book the best. I loved Rebecca but Jamaica Inn not so much. Although the writing was fabulous!
I read Jamaica Inn a few years ago. It was my first DuMaurier. I really enjoyed the reading experience. The dark, creepy atmosphere , the questionable characters and most of all the setting as we live near by and have visited Bodmin Moor many times. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book. I later read Rebecca, which I loved and is now a favourite book for me. Jamaica Inn isnt a favourite, but its a cracking story, non the less.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jamaica Inn. I had been meaning to read it for quite some time (being a Rebecca fan) and FOMO gave me the nudge. Loved the atmospheric descriptions, felt like I was there although I wouldn't have wanted to be! I don't think I'll forget the character of Mary Yallan anytime soon. Wanted to counsel her at every step of the way- "don't go there", "don't do it" but, of course, my advice was in vain. Good book recommendation. Looking forward to more.

I enjoyed this more than Rebecca, which is the only other Du Maurier I have read. I have the old black and white film to watch which I’m looking forward to!

How interesting, Glenda. I felt the other way around for Rebecca and Jamaica Inn, though I really did enjoy Rebecca but JI was just that bit more suited to my taste I think.

I loved how atmospheric Jamaica Inn was. Du Maurier is a master at creating a gothic, sinister atmosphere!

So pleased that FOMO prompted you to pick this one up! Poor Mary - I felt the same!

Thought I’d leave a discussion up for final thoughts on the book!
