Definitely the outsiders. And Scythe (I was on chapter five of the third book when the class was on chapter ten of the first book)

The Confessions of Frannie Langton. It’s about a black woman who’s a slave of a rich family in London, and she falls in love with her mistress. The worst part is that her mistress is dead and she’s the one accused for her murder. So the book is just in plain retrospective and her “confessions” of the “crime”.
