Hannah | 3371 comments I did know about the events contained in this book, as I saw the very good drama adaptation of it that the BBC made last year. Reading this book went into more detail than in the BBC series, and this was what I was looking for. The book tells of the founding and early missions of the SAS, the unit that was formed during WW2 with the aim of getting behind the German and Italian front lines in Africa and attacking and disrupting their fight against the British forces. The founder, David Stirling, is the main focus of the book, at least early on, as well as the unusual training regimes the recruits undertook. Macintyre has clearly well-researched his subject, and it is a very engaging read. The author also really goes into detail about the personalities of the main members involved in the creation and running of the SAS, which I also appreciated. The end does feel a little rushed, though I do like that we are told what happens to each of the main people in the book following the end of WW2.
