I was turned on to these years ago by some young guys in my office. There were only 3 books then and I read them back to back. I was very impressed with the level of detail. After just a few chapters, I did tell the friend who recommended it, "This author sure has a dark view of human nature". I decided that if Daenerys was brutally treated by her new husband, that would be it, I would quit reading. Good thing that turned out differently. I read one or two books after that but they seemed more meandering and then I decided I wouldn't read any more till the series was finished - good decision!

I never wanted to watch the series, because I could just about stand the violence on the page, seeing it would be too much. Also, I could stand the violence in the fantasy world, but if the same actions had been done by modern terrorists or WWII Nazis, I would have closed the book immediately.
