Hannah | 3276 comments This book is an example of the premise and blurb promising so much more than the book actually delivered. The book seemed to cover a lot of the same ground it previous books I have read by Boyd, and for a book about a former female spy living in a quiet village whose life is now under threat, it wasn’t as gripping as I had hoped it would be. Too much time was spent on uninteresting details, for example about the lengths Eva went to to avoid the men tailing her in the US when she was on a mission, and the characters were not well-developed, with lots of characters who didn’t really seem to play a large role in the book.

I’m happy to have finished this, and I’m glad I put it on my Subdue list, because otherwise I would probably have never gotten round to it.

Joy D | 10060 comments I have a couple of books by Boyd on my TBR. Your review makes me think I should reevaluate whether or not they should stay on it. I've read only one of his books and it didn't wow me.

I've not been wowed by any of his books, and to be honest, I can't really remember most of them. I've had a quick look at your shelf, and of the ones you have on it, I remember and liked Brazzaville Beach best.

Booknblues | 12045 comments I really liked Brazzaville Beach when I read it.

I read A Good Man in Africa, but while I noted that I liked it, I have no memory of it.
