Unlike Anne of Green Gables, I had trouble getting into it at first, but the book really grew on me as it went on. There was more of Montgomery’s magical descriptions of nature and Emily and the other characters became more interesting as time went on. There were some things I found odd, like Father Cassidy’s talk of fairies. Also, would a father really never “learn to love” his daughter because he believed his wife ran away? I suppose people do react to things differently. Another thing I wondered about is that Emily seems quite intelligent, so at thirteen would she really be blind to Dean’s feelings about her? Other readers have commented that he is creepy but I didn’t feel that way about him. I finished the book excited to read the next book and see what happens to a Emily and the people around her as she grows up.
