I've finished The Emigrants! A local reading group friend read and recommended Giants in the Earth as another possibility.

I have read Giants in the Earth also. I did like it better...maybe it was more time in America and less on the journey? I found the second book of the trilogy ( Peder Victorious: A Tale of the Pioneers Twenty Years Later) at a used bookstore in Maryland while visiting my daughter.
