Scott | 8696 comments Legal issues must go through support:

lethe | 16359 comments Also, the "fake" author has 15,000 followers?

Scott | 8696 comments This name will need to be added to Holiday's books so that they can be linked.

Good sleuthing!

David Raz (davidraz) | 12795 comments It seems like most of these were correct in 2021 and then another librarian removed Rebecca McNutt in 2022.
I think I corrected them all back and I left librarian notes so they will hopefully remain so.

And also another librarian, a couple of days ago.

(I wish librarians would check in this group first before doing something as drastic as this. Also, if they believed the "plagiarized" claim, they should have referred the author or the matter to Support.)

I fully agree with all you said. There was also massive book cover changing against policy, both in 2022 and recently.

message 9: by Tami (last edited Jan 26, 2023 10:15AM) (new)

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments The author has said she contacted support to no avail in a recent thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Just a question since in that thread I had moved her as the primary author since the book was not appearing in her profile (this was requested by the author), this was due to combined editions not having the same primary author, why would the plagiarizer be primary author? And I apologize for my mistake if you are referring to me above, I acted in good faith, but I didn't remove any covers, just had set the verified profile as primary since the book was not showing up in their profile, there is a bug that does that sometime, it looks like it appears in their profile now. I thought that was what was supposed to be done, I'm sorry.

David Raz (davidraz) | 12795 comments No Tami, I was not referring to you.
The name that appears on the first edition to ever be published should be the primary author on all editions. Claims of plagiarization should not be handled by librarians, they should be referred to support.

message 11: by lethe (last edited Jan 26, 2023 10:29AM) (new)

lethe | 16359 comments And neither was I, Tami. I was referring to someone else (I hadn't even seen that other thread yet).

Tami wrote: "I had moved her as the primary author since the book was not appearing in her profile (this was requested by the author), this was due to combined editions not having the same primary author, why would the plagiarizer be primary author?"

The thing is, the books were not plagiarized. They were first published under Rebecca McNutt. The author later changed her name to Rebecca Maye Holiday and tried (is trying) to get rid of the old name.

See also https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

For future reference, if actual plagiarism is suspected, the author/matter should be referred to Support, since it is a legal issue.

ETA I am basically saying the same as David, but with more words. Sorry about that :)

lethe | 16359 comments Rebecca Maye wrote: ""Speaking as the author of these books, I have the registered copyright to these books and only my name has any recorded rights to them. Goodreads may list metadata for counterfeits if it so chooses, but beyond ISBN (coming from Amazon print on demand companies, very reliable, eh?), Goodreads has no proof that the majority of these books actually belong to anybody other than myself."

We do not claim that the books belong to anybody other than yourself.

Librarians have access to changelogs. This is what you wrote in your author profile in April 2021:
Rebecca Maye Holiday (born Rebecca Maye McNutt) is a Nova Scotian author and former top Canadian Goodreads reviewer. She is primarily known for her large debut occult fantasy novel Necromancy Cottage, or, The Black Art of Gnawing On Bones, as well as a large variety of short stories and smaller novellas. She was also known as one of the youngest authors in Canada to have a high volume of books published under her name. She formally renounced the use of her maiden name in 2021, and prefers to be known by her full legal name, Rebecca Maye Holiday.

David Raz (davidraz) | 12795 comments FWIW I'll look into reducing the number of editions on that book you mentioned. Most of them are actually covers used in different formats, with librarian notes lost due to uncareful handling, but I'm sure at least some of those editions are redundant.

message 14: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments Rebecca Maye wrote: "First of all, the majority of that information isn't even true and I already edited it to correct it over a year ago. For one thing, I was never even married before in my life, so you're definitely off-base there.."

Hahaha! It is what you wrote. Maybe you made your author profile up?

Thank you both David and lethe for clarifying the issue. I'll follow your advice from now on. I'm still learning, thank you again :)

lethe | 16359 comments Rebecca Maye wrote: "My representative (who no longer even works for me) added that, and it was edited because it was inaccurate."

So you deny that you changed your name from Rebecca Maye McNutt to Rebecca Maye Holiday?

Be careful how you answer.
