CHAPTER ONE - IN WHICH A BOY ENDURES A MOST UNSETTLING INCIDENT
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a family like the Dursleys, dwelling at number four, Privet Drive, might be forgiven for expressing a measure of pride in the perfection of their normality. Indeed, one would be more likely to suspect almost anyone but them of the unsavouriness of involvement in anything the least strange or mysterious, so vigorous was their disapproval of such nonsense.
Mr Dursley had the honour of directing an enterprise known as Grunnings, which was engaged in the manufacture of drills. He was a man of generous frame, albeit curiously lacking almost any indication of a neck, and disporting a moustache of unheard-of proportions. Mrs Dursley was slight and silver-haired, though not naturally so. The unusual extent of her neck provided immense assistance in the business of her life, which was to observe her neighbours' affairs while remaining herself unobserved. The Dursleys were blessed with a scion lovingly known as Dudley, and were of the firm belief that he had no
equal.
While the Dursleys were determinedly content with their lot, they were the unwilling custodians of a secret, the discovery of which remained their greatest fear.
