Anita | 2 comments I read this book/novel around 2005, previously I was pretty sure it was included in a Reader's Digest bundle, but I went through all of them and didn't find it.

The main character is an Italian-descent actress named Angela struggling to keep afloat with her profession in a big city (NYC/Chicago/LA - not sure exactly). She blames the fact that she looks similar to Marisa Tomei. She shares her apartment with her male best friend.

SPOILERS AHEAD

When one of her friends gets engaged, she is pressured by that friend to make her boyfriend propose to her too. The boyfriend is a computer programmer named Keith, who tries to launch his own company. They travel together to meet his family (St. Cloud I think) - Angela is afraid of flying. Keith's sister has a German car, which the family disapproves of.

Eventually Angela manages to make Keith propose to her, but later they turn out to not be well suited together (eg. Keith wants her to find a more stable job). In the end, her blonde roommate turns out to be her perfect match.

P.S. It's shocking how many details I was able to recall and still not find the book...

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5528 comments Looks like Engaging Men by Lynda Curnyn. The boyfriend is called Kirk, not Keith, but close!
Felt a momentary happiness when she said, "You know, you look a bit like Marisa Tomei." Then, looking up at me, she continued, "Of course, that's only useful if you actually are Marisa Tomei."
